Migraines, anyone?

I've gone, say 5 or 6 weeks, without a migraine, and the last one wasn't even that bad. Well last night I felt like I was going to friggin die. Absolutely horrible, worse than the harshest hangover I've ever had, by a long shot. Not sure exactly why one came callin - work has been slack lately really, I haven't altered my diet at all, even checked my refresh rate, yep right where I left it at 85Hz. I got about 2 hours sleep last night, and that was only after a large mix of Advil and Aleve (prolly not too smart, but hey, I was getting desperate). My jaw actually hurts today from gnashing my teeth.

My neighbor saw me later this morning while I was retrieving some things from my car, and was asking how things have been going. We get to talking about migraines (she gets them) and she ends up giving me a pill called Zomeg. Was still feeling kinda banged up, so i took it. Made me feel kinda loopy, but man, talk about sweet sweet relief! Even the 'residual ache' is gone now.

I'm going to make an appointment with the doctor, now is a great time as my company just switched to a much better health plan (even if it cuts more out of the paycheck). I already had my eyes checked, and my perscription hasn't changed, so I know that's not causing it.

My question is, anyone here have migraines, and if so, what do you take for them? If you've seen someone about them, what did they do when you went in?

Just curious, thx...

Get some Migrin. I used to get migranes as bad if not worse than that every other week but not anymore.

The last time I was in, I got Migrin prescribed because I had to be rushed to the ER by my friends. The doctor there told me about it and it works really well; especially when you can feel one coming.

Holy sh!t! :Q I'm glad to say mine aren't that severe! Jeebus, now I feel like a puss! I can feel them coming, but the real indicator is the little white and purple explosions I see everywhere in my field of vision that tells me somethings in the mail.

Be glad, they can be one of the most painful things you'll ever expierence..

I hear that. And I've had a broken ankle before too, and that ain't no ham on rye... I remember wondering last night if I could knock myself out somehow...

The last time I had one I lost all feeling in my face and both of my arms went completely numb. I have had a horrible amount of pain and suffering from other things that have happened to me medically and that rates up as being one of the highest.

I don't get them very often any more, went through a bad period of them for a while. As for what I take, a handful of vicodin washed down with whiskey works best. And I know what's you're going to say. Well, so far, I've always woken up afterwards. And if you've ever had severe migraines, you'll understand when I say I'd be thankful to die instead.

Dude. Have you had a catscan or anything? That sounds pretty damn scary, you have my outmost sympathy! Arms going numb sounds like something else might be wrong.

Wow. The boldest concoction I've ever tried was 2 Lortab and 2 beers, and holy hell did that rock my world. Obviously your liver is made of sterner stuff! Jus curious, how much do you weigh? (I'm about 210lb).

What about Imitrex, Zomig, or Maxalt?

Oh, I get the occasional migraine. It rarely hurts. I just go blind for a while 😕

I had three of them in a period of about six months. Just seemed to go away on their own, though, I guess (fortunately for me).

Lucky for me my body seemed to have a natural defense. If I could get to a dark room with no noise, I could fall sleep (and I mean out like a light) for ~16 hours and wake up feeling fine. Never got to try out the medication I got for it, though, because I never had another one.

Edit: If you can avoid taking stuff like Vicodin, etc. then by all means I would try. Many of those medications that leave you feeling 'high' can be very habit-forming.

I take Advil Migraine and it seems to work fairly well, I take 2 and sleep for about 3 hours and most of the time my migraine isn't near as bad. Is Zomeg over the counter or by prescription? I'm always looking for better ways to get rid of migraines, unfortunately I get about one every week or so 🙁

It's called Midrin. It didn't help me - not in the least. My 2nd doc prescribed some Zomig and they are a life saver - if you take them during the symptom phase (auras and blind spots phase). I've posted a few times about getting migraines. To sum it up - yes, there is no relief when they are full blown. You just want to die. You can't even roll over in bed without it hurting. On top of that is the nausea. But you can't even make it to the toilet to try and let it out. You lay in bed completely helpless.

Do yourself a favor and get to the doc ASAP so he can prescribe you something. Take it the minute you feel any symptoms - this has been my saving grace. I hardly feel them, though you can tell it's there weighing down on your head. At least you are functional with it. My friend who works for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals says Relpax is good stuff too - haven't had a chance to try. It's an alternative. Imitrex I haven't heard good things about, though it remains popular.

The best thing you can do now is hunt down the cause. Diet perhaps... I finally found out after a year or so that it was consumption of too much MSG foods. Chinese foods especially (too bad I'm chinese). Avoid the top 3 foods for a while to see if you still get them: chocolate, cheese, and red wine. It can also be environmental triggers like constant loud music (thankfully not in my case). This is the best thing you can do to help yourself... prevention. Good luck.

I used to suffer from chronic migraines. I tried every perscription and trial offer that could be had. Some med's helped a little, but every one of them made me feel a bit nauseated. The only sure cure was to sleep it off. Even then though, some of the more painful migraines actually woke me up from sleep. I remember having migraines as far back as 10 years ago. Used to be just one every few weeks or so but the last couple years I'd get them every couple days. Med's treated my symptoms without a great deal of success.

Finally, I visited a reputable chiropractor and after three adjustments I am virtually migraine free. In six months I've had two migraines and I can attribute both of those to having been headaches acerbated by lack of sleep and long work hours in front of a LCD.

My particular migraines where a condition caused by improper spine alignment. YMMV.

I've heard Imitrex is great for migraines but I'm scared to try it, I even got a prescription for it a while ago but never got them. I've read that there have been people die from taking it that had undiagnosed heart disease and both my parents have high blood pressure so I figured it was in my best interest not to take it(plus it was like $20 per pill :Q, that was about 4 years ago though).

i get migraines that make me wanna just croak. First I get a flash, then the corona vision, i lose all vision and get this fuzzy sparkling glare in front of me, and i can only see through peripherial vision. then once i regain my eyesight, i get a terribly sharp and intense pain right behind one of my eyes. The pain is unbearable, taking regular pain killers don't work because I start vomitting for the next few hours. After i'm done vomitting and the pain is still there, i usually either pass out or get rushed to the emergency room.

I take imitrex but its effects are more hit and miss....but what works for me is trying to take something in conjunction with getting some sleep. Relpax is another medication that i'm trying, it seems to work but makes me drowsy...and the the residual migraine affect is there, light sensitivty....

migraines suck

Yeah, the Zomig is perscription. I was a little weirded out when the neighbor offered it to me, but she assured me it would be ok, as apparently it doesn't qualify as 'the big guns.'

I believe I've heard about that before, maybe I should go to a chiropractor and get checked out. I did suffer a bad neck injury when I was in high school, maybe something just ain't quite right in there.

then once i regain my eyesight, i get a terribly sharp and intense pain right behind one of my eyes. The pain is unbearable

Yeah, it's the eyes with me too. They feel....larger. 😕

i get them and they suck ass. One time I got one before my High School tennis tournament at the end of my senior year. Me and my partner were pitted against really high seede guys and I had enough pain killers in me to kill a horse. I was in too much pain to play without sun glasses even though it was very cloudy that day (probably made me look like a idot or maybe they thought I was trying to be cool). We lost the first set but on the second set we got the first 4 games. I was like, holy crap we can do this!

We lost 6-4 🙂

i get them. i find if i catch it just as it's coming on and take some extra stengh advil or tylenol, i can sort of control it. i still feel really weird and have to keep taking the meds for 24 hours or so, but at least i'm not rolling on the floor in agony. of course the trick is keep from puking up the pain pills.

worst pain i ever had was a stomach migrane. i literally thought i was dying.

I get really bad headaches, I don't know if they are migraines or not though. I can't stand light or noise, and I throw up. It hurts pretty badly, whatever it is, and I've broken 16 bones and hyperextended my knee. I passed out for that one.

I suffered from extreme headaches. I would have headaches daily and a migrane every week. And have a severe headache once every 3 days (by severe i had to put on those industrial ear plugs and have the room completely dark because any sound or light would be too much)--and migranes were much worse and usually involved throwing-up. By 15, i became immune to tylonal, alieve, and was warned by my doctor not to take asprin for my headaches (because too much asprin too offen is very bad--asprin thins the blood). Then i suffered a headache that lasted 2 weeks (that changed from light to migrane level every couple of hours), during this i missed 6 days of school. Finally my mom asked my doctor what else we could try and he sugested a chiripractor (reason he waited is that i was too young to go one before and at 15 i was still on the young side for spinal adjustment). After 2 months with a chiropractor, going in everyother day, i sufferd no migranes. Then i was going every 4 days and i kept suffering less and less headaches. After a year of going to the chiropractor, im in what they call "maintance care," (only go in when i start to get slight headaches and is preventative adjustments/medicine) so I go about once a month and i have a headace about once a month and my last migrane was about 2 years ago.

Cliffnotes:
Suffered from extreme case of headaches (headaches daily, severe headaces every three days, and a migrane once a week). Became immune to a couple of painrelieves and couldnt take the others (excedrine and most others because they contains asprin--which is not good to take to much of). Was told to try a chiropractor. After a about a year of going to a chiropractor, i started maintance care and suffer about one headache a month and a migrane every 2 years.

PS I played soccer religiously, we won state (WI) a couple of times (Mequon Unitied), from U8-U14 and i was known on my team for being a good headerer. Well that is what we concluded was the cause of my headaches. IMO they should make headers the equivilant of touching the ball with your hand untill U14 (U14=under the age of 14). When the chiropractor took a couple of xrays of my spine, my cervical group--neck part of the vertebra, was extremely curved and way out of aline. This was the cause for headaches because after the chriopractor's adjustments, my spine was much straighter and headaches practically disappeared.

EDITED:
Just saw Sketcher's post and he like me got his problem solved with a chiropractor--coincidince I THINK NOT. (Pointed this out for those that suffer from migranes)

yeah if you're sensitive to light and sound and throwing up, it's a migrane. 🙁

I had them when I was younger, I took nothing for it. The pain was horrible and I threw up every five minutes, I actually looked forward to puking since the pain would be less right after doing it.
