Might have lost a memory card on an air plane

My wife and I went to Las Vegas last week for 3 days. One of those days I spent at the SHOT show. The third day my wife and I walked the strip and saw some of the sights and flew out friday evening.

Put my 8 gig memory card in my carry on - opened my pack to get some beef jerky out, and that is when I think the card fell out.

I'am so mad at myself right now for not securing the card better then what I did. We were standing in line at the airport security. I thought I would make things easier on the metal detector and put everything metal in my pack - belt, keys, cell phone, memory card. I guess I should have kept the card in my pocket and and not worried about the airport metal detector.

I filled out a form on the continental airlines lost and found page, but I do not expect anything to come of it.

So long about 6 gigs of pictures and videos of las vegas and the shot show. Thankfully, there were no nude pics on the card.

That sucks. I always transfer off pictures to my laptop before traveling just in case and anything that shouldn't be viewed gets put into an encrypted location. Tough loss. I think we can safely blame the TSA for this one.

Why wasn't the card in the camera?

The memory card was almost full from days 1 and 2. Before my wife and I walked the strip and flew home the third day, I swapped out the card for a fresh one. 1280p hd videos take up a lot of room. My wife and I will usually bring at least 2 - 8 gig cards each.

When I think of a "memory card," I think of an accessory for video game consoles.

It's just too vague. Most flash storage, I refer to more specifically:
"SD card"
"Micro SD card"
"Memory Stick" (Sony)
...etc.

oh my. Some TSA agent will find it and call in the Bomb Squad. You have just committed a Federal crime.

Considering the majority of the pictures were of the SHOT show, and included images of AK-47s, AR-15s, shotguns, rifles, pistols,,,,,. I sure hope homeland security finds my memory card.

I always leave "If found, please return to..." messages on the root of my storage devices. If it's for a camera or other image-capable device I usually leave and image in the appropriate folder to view it on the device without needing a PC. For example, I've always had a JPEG image on my PSP Memory Stick Pro Duo cards as well as all of my camera's SD cards.

I thought about putting an html document and a text file in the root of the card, but I was not sure if the files will be deleted when the camera formats the card.

My wife and I bought our first digital camera 5 years ago, and this is the first time either of us have lost a card. I should have been more careful and not just put the card into by carry on pack. I usually keep the cards in the camera case, but I was nervous going through security and just overlooked the situation.

You disregarded the warnings and now you know, what happens in vegas... stays in vegas.

Seriously though, perhaps a fine citizen will discover the card and attempt to find it's owner. I would if I came across it. Good luck!

Unless the OP had some tracking information on the flash card or in a photo, no way to get it to him.

That is why travel sites/agencies/providers recommend that the first picture in the camera at all times is identification.

memory cards are probably the worst thing to loose out of all memory devices in the past.

I remember finding a bare 5.25 disk on a bus as a kid. I took it home, put it in another sleeve and tried to open it.

Found the Apple classics Fuller Brush Man and some others. Then a small text file with the owners name/address/phone number with some other personal info.

I was like 12 and called him as if I were the police and found his bait for kids. He was all in a panic saying he thought he destroyed the disk. I wish I recorded it.

That is the reason you should always upload the card data to a site before you pack. Anytime I am on vacation when I finish the days photos they get dumped to an online site for storage. If you don' t have a pc with you , use one in a public place.

Vacation pics are too valuable and with airlines losing things I don't risk it anymore.

I'm confused. What on the disk seemed incriminating?

how much porn can you fit on a 5.25 disk?

i'm waving my bullshit flag on this one

what? Sherwood Forest, fuller brush man and a few other apple ][ adult titles.

The porn wasn't very detailed /real like today's, it was line art with 4 or so colors available at times.

I don't know why the guy would believe that he was in trouble for having adult pornography. Also, a 12-year-old impersonating a cop would be pretty obvious. Maybe you have a false memory that he "fell for it."

yeah dawg, it's kosher as lox to "plant" a porn disk on a bus full of middle schoolers.

Those were early apple porn titles. The bus we were on was a middle school field trip.

Not a good place to lose a porn disk.

OK. When I searched for "Fuller Brush Man," it seemed to be an obvious reference to a Red Skelton movie.
