I started school and have been wanting a laptop for school. I am not a big fan of laptops in the first place but i can see where a thin and light little laptop for taking notes, sitting on my bed writing a paper, an organizer, and school work storage, could come in handy.

Simple Requirments: 12.1 screen, Core 2 Duo, minimum 512 ram, 60gb HD, wireless, thin/light, media card reader
Welcome Extras: fingerprint reader, 5,400rpm HD, xp pro or media center ed, built in webcam, dvd burning, svidia out, dvi out, non-integrated videocard (ie. nvidia 7300), bluetooth

To my knoweldge the only 12.1 core 2 duo on the market was a Dell (gag) until the one i bought. Toshiba Satelite u205-s5034. 12.1" 1280x800 screen, Core 2 Duo T5200 1.6ghz 2mb L2, 100gb HDD 5400rpm, 1gb ram, .11 a/b/g wireless, integrated 128mb video, DVD Multi (no double layer recording), media card reader, media center 2005, 4.1lbs, etc. EVERYTHING i wanted!!!!! minus some of the extras, EXCEPT it isn't very attractive with a very dull square shape to it with its all abs plastic design AND it is 1.35" THICK!!!!!!! I want something thinner! The Sony 13.3 is thinner and lighter though a tiny bit larger but of course costs more.
At Frys i saw a Fujitsu Lifebook that is like 1/2" thick with the screen closed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but not sure about battery life, can't remember if it has a cd drive, and it was a core solo.
Now do i return it and lose 15% to restocking and just wait for something thinner to be developed? or should i just keep this thing for the next year and a hald and never be happy and not take it to as many places with me due to its size?

I still don't understand why people are so anal about laptop size. The only ways I can think of to carry a laptop are under my arm or in my bag and the desktop replacement laptops I get work fine for that. The next step is fitting in my pocket, which not even the UMPCs do.
 
Well... you should be happy. You have a thick one.




And stop complaining, any laptop you get these days is far better than what was available a few years ago. Thicker = more durable and probably has better performing hardware.

the point of this thread is i don't have to live with it i can take it back, wait for something better to come out by xmas, add some $ and maybe get a 13.3 if there is one out there that is the same size but thinner, keep this, etc.

the post by SagaLore was lame aswell. Though it is true they also have better performing hardware at half this thickness aswell so don't go running your mouth. they just don't have it with this cpu and this screen size yet or i would have purchased it

to any of those that tried to help or will try i thank you and i appreciate it
 
I saw a widescreen Toshiba at Office Depot yesterday for $899. It had a DVD writer, 1GB RAM, keyboard with number pad, 100GB hard drive, and that huge screen. It was tempting me...

I think SagaLore was referring to something other than your laptop being thick... and no not your head.

1.35" does seem thinck for a thin+light but it's not bad. My desktop replacement 17" lappy is about 1.75-2"

Why do you need a C2D? with the integrated video and slow HDD I don't think it's worth paying for the C2D over a regular CD. It's not like you can play better games on it.

I would have recommended a MacBook with Windows. maybe the black one with a DVD burner. It's very thin and powerful and you can put up to 2GB of RAM in it. The wireless card's reception is outstanding too.

 
Oh bummer. The Core Solo was thinner, but you HAD TO HAVE Core Duo to type your papers and send your email.

Funny, I dont feel sorry for you.
 
Why didn't you buy the Dell with the dedicated video card?? It's thinner too... Return that POS Toshiba (worst notebook brand) and buy a Dell.
 
I didn't really read your post, but I did read about the thickness. I always thought the thicker laptops were easier to type on when placed on a desktop or table. Thin ones leave the keyboard too low. That's at least an advantage you have....in addition to less proprietary replacement parts. The thinner ones usually require a lot of external accessories that all require special dongles, etc....be glad if you got one that doesn't require that crap.

He can because his opinion is his and no more valid than any one elses. As you can see, it's very easy to call someone a "dumbass" despite being "basically illiterate."

i looked at it but it is expensive and CD not C2D

mercanucaribe: i would never buy a dell! and from what i have seen, heard, and my own experience toshibas are great. I use to also work in major sales (electronics) at costco and out of the brands we sold we got the fewest toshiba returns.

Specop 007, I want a dual core to be a little bit more future proof since i do not plan on upgrading/replacing my laptop every year. also if every article you read core vs core 2 they state there is up to a 20% performance increase clock-to-clock while maining the same power consumption and price. Also every article states that if you already have a core duo there is no reason to upgrade but if you don't then wait for core 2. Also it might just be for papers now but down the line you never know, and i do some photo editing and web design, i do watch movies, i do play the occasional game (WoW, BF2, UT) but not often, so again to future proof even if just for an extra year or 2.
