Might be the beginning of a white South African refugee influx in Canada.

Can you blame anyone for wanting to bail on the situation in South Africa?

That is... assuming studies like this are true:
Text
28% said they had raped a woman or girl, and 3% said they had raped a man or boy. Almost half who said they had carried out a rape admitted they had done so more than once, with 73% saying they had carried out their first assault before the age of 20.

Not surprising. I have always found it just kind of weird that whites live in South Africa. I mean, it wasn't long ago they were literally the ruling class stepping on the Blacks. I imagine many are perfectly nice people at least now if not then. Something I've had a really hard time finding is "What it's like living in South Africa as a white person".

I've googled it before. I would like to know what it's like, how segregated are they? Are they often the victims of violence, do they feel welcome there, what circles do they run in, etc. Does anybody here know?

I am curious about this as well. I have never met anyone from South Africa, so I am a bit at a loss.

Rape is bad enough, but South Africa has some of the highest HIV rates in the world.

Time to go.

They live in gated communities with guards, like Americans living in Mexico. On top of that, they have flame thrower car alarms.

South Africa is rather productive for an African nation though. They make Ubuntu!

A South African guy founded it (holds dual citizenship with the UK), but it looks like most of the operations take place abroad.

Every skilled South African who leaves makes 10 unskilled workers jobless, according to research by the University of South Africa (Unisa) in Pretoria.

article is 5 years old, though.

Many, many whites fled in the 1990s, a lot of them moving here, to Canada and Europe. The situation was so bad that Mandela met personally with whites' representatives, took care to provide extra security for the white enclaves, etc. Virtually all science, management and high-tech people were white (90% or so) and if they kept leaving, the situation would have resembled Zimbabwe of the past 20 years.

I have a good friend in SA who is a white woman. She lived here for some time, but moved back to take up an engineering job. She visits every two years or so, and the last time we met she said that she's probably moving back to the US next year. The election of the new president (a buffoon not unlike Bush Jr.) only made things worse. Now white has become a dirty word in SA, and she said the situation is now worse than it was right after the black came to power - wide-spread corruption, unbelievable crime rates, zero protection from the state for whites and blacks alike, unless you're in government or rich enough to provide for your own security.

She has a German shepherd dog that she never leaves the house without, and has survived several attempts of robbery, car hijacking and rape with the dog's help.

Fuck 'em. They should be forced to stay there. You made your bed, lie in it. Don't have any black in you? You're about to.

This is mostly BS. My father in law is from Cape Town (non-white) and a good friend lives in JOburg.
I've went to SA and met lots of people of many races and suffered no ill will. Things are actually really nice there. Everytime you hear a Africa story its always how F'd up and backwards they are, but the story on the ground is much different. People are much more open and free to discuss race there in a way that is quite refreshing. We have a hard time discussing race here for fear of saying anything that may get misconstrued as racist, so we instead pretend everyone is the same.

There are problems there like anywhere (esp Joburg) but I felt as welcome as anybody, and as safe as nearly anywhere in the US (outside of the local hellholes of Camden NJ and parts of Philly, Newark, NJ, etc.)

South Africa is not as bad as Zimbabwe where it was practically hunting season on whites. Due to the leadership of Nelson Mandela, there wasn't some massive purge or payback. But South Africa does have high crime rates and stringent affirmative action/quota type laws that are onerous.

South Africa is a bit like an oil republic. They have diamond wealth coming in. In fact I wonder if the difference b/w SA and Zimbabwe is not so much leadership as it is the fact that SA's diamond wealth (in addition to enriching the Debeers) pays out enough economic and political "rent" to keep the underclass happy.
