Might be selling the lunchbox :( No more Scion xB

When I originally bought my Scion - I was living with my parents, and they said I could continue to do so as long as I went to college. I planned on having the car paid off in less than a year - life was looking pretty cherry. A few days after I took delivery of the car, my mother and step father both got military orders to another state.

So there I was - stuck going to college full time, living by myself with no sort of financial assistance. I've been delivering pizzas in my xB full time for the past year and a half, breaking even with my bills, and whatever little extra I've been putting towards the car. I owe about 8K on the xB still - but I just can't afford it anymore. Too much work and time I exhaust just to have this car. Trust me - I love the xB, I've driven 33K miles in it, and it's been great.

Recently - I found a 1996 Camry Coupe for sale - slush box, but with a V6. I supposed to test drive it - I figure from the sale of my xB, I can at least net 4K (that's making the assumption that I would be able to sell the car privately at around 12-13K according to KBB). That would more than cover the Camry, and I'd be debt free.

Anyone think that selling price is realistic? I live in the southeast - and the only Scion dealer here never has them - they're always sold out. I'm making the assumption that they're in great demand here. How long do you guys think I would have to wait to find a buyer for the xB?

Oh yeah - don't forget the obligatory "OMG - UGLIEST BOX ON WHEELS EVAR!!!!!" comments 😉

The MSRP on a 2006 is $14,420 - $15,220, and you want to get 12-13K for one with 33K miles on it! WTF?

In the 35 years I've been driving, I've NEVER owned a new car, or had a car payment, so you certainly don't want to know what my opinion is!

Even if you can get 11k, you'd be ahead of the game.
It doesn't cost anything to try to sell it.
Hang a for sale sign in the window and put a printout of the Kelly Bluebook page with it.

You actually think someone is going to want to buy one of those? I'll sell em a box instead, and I can even glue a couple wheels on the bottom.

I certainly wouldn't expect to get 12-13K for it, but as long as you can be completely out of debt and have a replacement vehicle to drive I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Consider the money you lose on it to be a lesson.

I agree. New cars are a waste of money. I got my car for $5400 three years ago and I plan on keeping it for a few more years also.

How much were you paying a month in order to pay it off in a year? Sounds like a bad financial decision there.

I wouldn't expect to get KBB, but who knows. It all depends on how long you can hold out.

In your sitution I wouldn't worry about getting a nice car as a replacement, just get something RELIABLE! Corolla or Civic or something like that, slightly newer so you won't have problems with it. I wouldn't expect to get that much out of the xB, either.

You'll easily get 13K out of it.

EDIT >> Don't mention the pizza delivery and you can get more. Put it up for sale for ~15K and don't take the first lowballer. Just make sure it is clean and is current on it's routine maintenance.

The camry was sold when I got there 🙁 That said - I'd have no problem getting 13K for the xB - another local owner just sold his with about 20K miles on it for near 15K, same year as mine, only other options being some better wheels.

I make about 22K a year - when I was living with the 'rents, that was just getting socked away and spent on frivilous stuff - could have easily paid it off had that situation not changed.

I have some money saved up - but that would leave me with about $2k left to pay on the xB.

How can they be selling for that much with MSRP being around 15k? I thought there was no markup and a decent supply?

There is no markup, and the supply is exhausted. Toyota is building below the demand for the vehicles - there's a waiting list at my local dealer, all of the xB's that come in are already sold. Same with the tC and the Prius vehicles. Residual values will stay this high as long as the market isn't flooded with them (a move domestic manufacturers could learn about).

There are a lot of people who buy the marketing hype / have no taste?

Well, duh. The Tc looks good and the Prius is a status symbol right now. The xB is a lunchbox...

You were delivering pizza full time just to pay for the car? I guess this is proof that students who work full time aren't necessarily smarter than the rest of us.

Good assumption - obviously you haven't gotten very far in your schooling since you flagrantly us Ad Hominem attacks, and straw man arguements.

No - I work full time because I don't get a handout from anyone - I work full time to pay rent on a townhouse, tuition, electric, water, and cable bills, insurance for my vehicle, and other expenses.

Well your post made it sound like you were working just to pay for the Scion, especially since you said selling it would erase all your debt, and you were living with your parents...

Edit: Whoops, I misread the part about your parents. 😱
