looks good for an ibm at that price. was wondering how this handles heat. i plan to leave it on 24/7 running aim in the background and well, maybe some F@H with cpu at 20% er so.
anybody own one? it looks sharp. how is the noise factor? never bought a laptop before, but i've used a hp pavilion on before. any thanks is GREATLY appreciated.

I have an R40 which basically doesn't heat up at all, no matter what I do. I only have a 1.3 Ghz CPU but a Radeon 7500 and lots of memory and a big disk.

I have seen people bash the R50e for a nonstandard ACPI implementation and other incompatibility reasons.

I have made a very similar thread about the R50e if you want to get some extra info link
From what I heared it's almost equivelant to those T series , Except it's made out a very rigid ABS plastic , which serves for almost the same purpose as the carbon fiber material in the T&X series. it's an excellent deal and hose thinpads last a lifetime, I say go for it

PS: As you can see from my thread I have ordered it yesterday, so I won't be able to tell you about the hands on experience, untill I receive it 2-3 days from now hopefully.

please do a mini review when you get it, i am most likely going to go with this. thank you for the heat info, just let me know how it is in your new one. thanks

To add to your info, the 512MB extra ram deal ends sept 03, but the discounts on the R50e series which is about $ 100/R50e ends sept 22nd so if you are going to get, it you better hurry up before sept 22nd ;)

To be honest to you I am BIGTIME IBM DIEHARD, but I never dared to reach for my wallet untill I have seen such a good deal on the best laptops in the world, it's true that some manafacturers will even offer you a sweet Turion 64 for the same price and a better GPU, but lets face it, how long do you think those Compaq/Dell/Toshiba Laptops will last before they create a hole in your pocket, or cause you a headache from the amount of time you have to send it for a replacement/repair and thats if your warranty lasts enough. most of the low quality laptops I have seen lasted 1 full year before the motherboard quit suicide.

hehe, now your really making me want that ibm!

i especially like the hdd protection and monitoring stuff, i read a review on the r52 and it looks sweet. the cooling system looks good also, it draws air in through the keyboard, over the heat pipes, and out the side. really interesting. i can't wait!

i also went to best buy yesterday to look around, but i'd say 50% of the notebooks there (20 ish) were celerons. the others were either $1500 sonys with a pm 1.6ghz or $2000 toshibas.

i am for sure going the ibm route. i owned a ibm desktop before with a p2, windows 98 and 256mb of ram. it lasted for 5 years, and then i through it away when i recieved a sony vaio. probably still could have been alive.

So is the R50 about the same thickness as the T series now? I remeber like the R40s having about a half inch additional thickness to them.

The R50 needs to be a little more thicker than the T series because the T series uses carbon fber material, which is rigid enough @ less thickness than the ABS plastic that R50 uses, but most people told me they couldn't find a difference to be mentioned, they both saerve the same purpose.

But remember the R52 is very similar to the R50, except the R52 is very T series like , the R50 express doesn't have a touchpad, nor S-video nor the new Intel GMA900 GPU, but still for everything other than gaming it's awesome, you might want to put a 7200rpm HDD and get even a smoother boost, or like what I have, I have a Toshiba 5400rpm hdd with 16MB cache , gives a smooth boost with no extra battery consumption. also the R52 has 533 MHZ fsb, plus DDR2 memory , the R50e is economy for a reason don't expect more than you need it just what fits the bill ;)
