Might be a dumb question: Can I share files on a mixed OS LAN?

I just upgraded to Win2000. My roommate is using Win98. Will we still be able to share files? I got my network settings all setup, but the only computer I see in my workgroup is mine. He can only see his computer in network neighborhood. Currently, we are both supposed to be in the same workgroup. Do I need to change that? Or is there any site that can help? Thanks in advance.

I have seen this problem before, see if you can ping your roommate. If you can, be sure you both have NetBEUI installed or NetBEUI enabled over tcp/ip. If all this is correct and you still cant see each other, try to manually enter his name like //Spuffin/
hope this helps

*ALSO*

If you are at college, your college may block NetBEUI. If this is the case, use IIS with Win2k to setup an FTP server and you can transfer files that way.

I gave that a try, but it didn't work. I'm in an apartment, not a dorm, so it wouldn't be NetBEUI being blocked. Oh well. :(

How are you connecting to each other?

Thru a HUB or Direct link with CAT5?
You might need to cross the cable if its direct.

Actually there is no need for Netbeui to be installed
to share files. Just make sure you have tcp/ip binded to your
adapter and Client for MS networks installed as well.
And of course enable file and printer sharing.

Edit: Forgot you were in win2k, remember to add your friends
user name into the users and groups list located in your
control panel. You probably just want him to be a read only
user, hope this helps
