midrange gaming lappy?

ive never been into laptops really, having been a serious gamer for a while, but in recent months ive gamed only occassionally, and not usually anything new and shiny except HL2.

since my wife moved out and took the computer, i thought id get a laptop that i could carry around the house or even outside on a nice afternoon. then i thought..well i could get one with a decent video card in it, just for an occassional game. id be playing morrowind, ut2k4, and maybe a few other games, something a desktop 9600 could handle quite well; can i expect similar performance from a laptop with a 9600?

and then where do i get one from? theres a couple with a 9600/9700 in the fs/t forums, but what do i need to know? or look for? i dont want to spend more than $700 or so, nothing high end.

whats the nvidia equivalent to a 9600? should i bother with ebay, or pass it over completely? does dell run any of their specials or coupons where i could get a decent new laptop for some light gaming for under $800 or is that way out of the question?

i wont be doing much, but id rather something a bit stronger than a radeon 9000 since that wasnt much of a desktop card to start with; and wont satisfy me im sure.

any help, info, tips, leads etc would be appreciated 🙂

Equivalent would be around an X300 with 128MB. Just missed the dell coupon for 750 off of 1499. You could have got the Inspiron 6000 for $750 then. Even so, they still have the $600 orf 1499 coupons running right now. Lowest spec I got was $901 after coupon, that spec follows...

1.6
256MBbbbbbb (Dell rapes you on ram)
40GB
X300 128MB
1 Year at home warranty.

guess my price range is a bit off then eh? i musta been looking at another laptop when i put 6-800 bucks and wanting a 9600

🙂 maybe i better stick to a radeon 9000 type, any other opinions or ideas? i could squeeze a few more bucks out for something perhaps, though i guess a 9000 could hold me over pretty well

No, you really want to get a 9600.

You can find a used/refurb M68xx for around $800-$900. 15.4" screen, A64, 64MB Radeon 9600. That's the best you'll find for gaming in your price range.
You might be able to get a new Dell 6000 w/X300 (which is PCI-E version of 9600) with the previously mentioned coupons.

hmm, ill save up for the next dell coupon then while i look for these emachine/gateway lappys and see what i can get

thanks guys 🙂

I have an eMachines M6811 and it sucks for gaming. UT2003, FarCry and HL2 are so choppy on it. Other than that it's a great fast laptop.

You can probly get a cheap Asus Z71v 15.4" for around that price if you hunt for it. I know http://www.geared2play.com has cheap prices.

EDIT

From geared2play.com:
1.6GHz P-M, non mem/HDD/OS, CDRW/DVDROM, wifi for $1125 (and the rest of course that is on the mobo, GF6600 128MB)

60GB 5400RPM: ~$100
1GB DDR2 533 SODIMM: ~$100
Windows XP OEM: ~$100(?)

And tada, you are set!!!
