Midnightbox. Not sure what it is yet, maybe a big TV $2099.95

I posted this, not because it is a hot deal, although it may wind up being one, but because I want to know who is going to spend $2,099 on something they don't know what it is. Tonight looks different though, it looks like there is not going to be a price increase so it will remain that price until it is revealed on what it is.

I am guessing some sort of big TV. Maybe trying to compete with Woot's last killer TV deal.

If anyone figures it out, let us know here.

I'm guessing the Samsung SP-P4231 42 in. HDTV-Ready Plasma Television

Just curious.. then why do you bother to read them? The title is pretty clear on what it is.

Wish I would have seen it sooner to get the points.

Its a Philips/Magnavox.

Judging from the boxes of information. Philips/Magnavox spec shoots look that way.

Midnight box sux imo, and so does this thread...its not a hotdeal unless you know what it is and know that it is a hot deal.

crappy deal, that samsung is less and is small and has a much better picture

native Samsung res' = 852x480 [EDTV]
native H&B res' = 1366 x 768 [HDTV]

'Can't really say which has a "much better picture"; nor can I say if the res' details listed are honest.

The H&B has an HDTV OTA tuner; I don't think the Sammie does.

I've no affiliation with the seller or OP. I just don't think it's such a bad deal in contrast to the Samsung... but I ain't about to buy one, either.

The site linked above for the Samsung prices a -refurbished- unit; Froogling suggests the Samsung's cost is about the same as the H&B ($2100).

where do you see refurb, I only see brand new, factory sealed

plasma pixels arent the same as lcd pixels so a pixel to pixel comparison isnt fair

OOPS! I had multiple Samsung screens up, and apparently read "refurbushed" off the wrong site (which I'd gone to for more technical information on the product). Sorry -- I've deleted that misinformation above.

"aren't the same"??? There are differences, but I'm unaware of any that prevent pixel-to-pixel comparisons. Plasma has better color saturation, off-axis color accuracy, deeper blacks and richer contrast ratios. LCD's have higher potential resolution (smaller cell size), less eye-fatigue if you're close to the screen, and longer life (less "burn-in"). Or, perhaps I'm miss-informed.

The ADVANTAGES of Plasma over LCD are:

1. Larger screen size availability.

2. Better contrast ratio and ability to render deeper blacks.

3. Better color accuracy and saturation.

4. Better motion tracking (little or no motion lag in fast moving images).

The DISADVANTAGES of Plasma vs LCD include:

1. Plasma TVs are more susceptible to burn-in of static images.

2. Plasma TVs generate more heat than LCDs, due to the need to light of phosphors to create the images.

3. Does not perform as well at higher altitudes.

4. Shorter display life span (about 30,000 hours or 8 hrs of viewing a day for 9 years) than LCD. This can vary according to other environmental and use factors.

LCD television ADVANTAGES over Plasma include:

1. No burn-in of static images.

2. Cooler running temperature.

3. No high altitude use issues.

4. Increased image brightness over Plasma.

5. Longer display life (about 60,000 hours - at which time all you may need to do is replace the light source, not the entire set). This can vary according other environmental and use factors.

DISADVANTAGES of LCD vs Plasma televisions include:

1. Lower contrast ratio, not as good rendering deep blacks.

2. Not as good at tracking motion (fast moving objects may exhibit lag artifacts).

3. Although LCD televisions do not suffer from burn-in susceptibility, it is possible that individual pixels on an LCD televisions can burn out, causing small, visible, black or white dots to appear on the screen. Individual pixels cannot be repaired, the whole screen would need to be replaced at that point, if the individual pixel burnout becomes annoying to you.

4. LCD televisions are more expensive than equivalent-sized Plasma televisions.

plasma pixels are not square like lcd screens.
