Midnight, 10PM, 9PM, where the F do you draw the line? - Black Friday Rant

So stores used to open at 6:00 AM on Friday, then started the 4:00 AM, 3, 2 then last year many, including Outlet malls opened at midnight. This year Walmart will open at 10:00 PM Thursday and Toys-r-us at 9:00... I mean what the fvck... Why even close the stores, stay open on fvckin Thanksgiving all day idiots...

Its irritating, it used to be a tradition, stores opening at 6:00 AM! it was a charm. People would stand in line all night and then die in stampede at 6... what happened to all that? why this race to open earlier than other, be the first to open. I don't like it, its confusing and killing the Black Friday tradition. It must be stopped.

I agree, it's ridiculous. The sad part is that you know there are people out there that will skip having thanksgiving dinner so they could be first in line for the shitty $99 laptop at BB.

The next step will be:

We're open all day Thursday! Beat the rush and get in on our specials while everybody else is eating turkey with their friends and family.

I refuse to take part in the idiocy. If I can get it online at a decent hour whenever I decide to get out of my comfy bed then cool. If not oh well.

I dunno what the point is? Stores are in it to make money aren't they so wouldn't the one that starts their sale monday and opens all week be more profitable?

Tradition?? Some of us are old enough to remember before Black Friday early opening began.

I don't care at all. I order stuff online at any hour.

If it bothers you, I respect your anger. Good luck at getting it changed.

6:00 am? first black friday i ever went to we showed up about 30 minutes before opening and it was light outside. so, no, not 6:00 am. may have been 7:00 am. that was the geforce3 ti200 sale at best buy, iirc. picked up a dreamcast and a ton of games.

It is absolutely ridiculous.

I won't support any store that thinks opening before 6 am the day after Thanksgiving is an acceptable practice. Aside from the general stupidity that black Friday has become (only carrying 4 of the major sale items, people fighting, trampling for gifts). I don't want to support treating workers this way. It is an abysmal thing to do to people during the holidays. I've worked retail and my mom is currently working retail. She will be working a twelve hour shift starting at 2am the Friday after tday just to sell a handful of items with a decent discount and a large number of items with little discount.

Of course my non-support doesn't matter since I don't do black friday shopping ever, but this new trend is terrible.

I laugh at the people waiting in line to spend money. Everything they sale always turns up for the same price or better later.

The stores only open because there is a demand for it. There's a 24hr drug/grocery store behind my house that always seems to be busy. Even on Christmas morning, people pile into there. Same goes for the local 24-hr walmart.

I wouldn't be caught dead lining up at a store at 4am for any reason.

On a similar note, I've noticed people afflicted with the the Christmas Crazies already out and about. That particular illness causes people to loose all common sense, become agitated, push and shove for no reason, and completely forget how to drive, especially in parking lots.

In the near future, B&M stores will realize that they just need to offer better deals 52 weeks out of the year to compete with online retailers. And that will be the death of Black Friday.

You underestimate people. They're like trained dogs that do what they're told. If they're told to stand in line at 4am, they'll stand in line at 4am. As for me, I hate crowds, and won't stand in line to save a few bucks, or more likely get bait/switched. My time is more valuable than that.

In MA, will not happen. Earliest they can open is 12AM after thanksgiving due to the Blue Law. As a result, the earliest stores will open at 12:30 AM so workers can prepare the store at 12 AM.

Don't feel sorry for those fools. Feel sorry for the employees who *have* to show up at work and deal with them on what used to be the family holiday.

That sucks too. I used to work at Circuit City and it was mandatory for all employees to work BF. Most of us did open to close. One hell of a day, by the end of the night we were all sitting in a circle on the floor exhausted. I made good money though. I had one guy give me a list of stuff he wanted and $40. Suffice to say I promptly found everything on the list.

Yeah I have no doubt it would be an easier pill to swallow if employees could work on a commission. They'd probably love to show up in that case considering how much they could make. Giving up Thanksgiving for close to minimum wage, though... ouch.

I used to work at BB. Unfortunately, I worked at a store in Iowa, and my family all lived (lives) in Chicago. I was always scheduled all day, starting at 3am (open at 4am). Which means, that I would have to leave my home at around 4pm to get back to Iowa by about 9-10pm, go to bed and get up at 3am, to be exhausted all day.

This whole midnight bullshit? Sorry, let me close or its no call, no show time for me. I worked too hard the other 364 days of the year (okay, obviously not all of them) to have them screw me on a holiday. :\

It was fun waking up at 3-5AM years ago...now, I have everything I need and the deals aren't good enough for me to even bother. I'll probably look at the ads this weekend but I don't even care any more.
