Middle-Aged Sex and Sympathy Ring Busted
March 15, 2002 08:15 AM ET
TOKYO (Reuters) - Police in Japan said Friday they had shut down an illegal sex ring popular among middle-aged men seeking sex and sympathy from prostitutes whose ages ranged from 40 to 70.
"Something like this is pretty rare," said an official at Tenma police station in the metropolis of Osaka, western Japan.
"It's hard to understand why they wouldn't prefer younger females, but people who were customers said they found it easier to talk with women their age."
The prostitution ring was run by a gangster and his common-law wife, who were arrested for violating Japan's anti-prostitution law.
At its peak, the operation employed 11 prostitutes, including housewives whose husbands had lost their jobs and women up to their necks in debt, the police official said.
The sex ring, which began operating last April and was shut down in February, charged between 17,000 yen ($131.60) and 25,000 yen per 90-minute session and pulled in revenue of around 40 million yen in less than a year.
"I guess it's a sign of the times, a reflection of an aging society," the police official said.
