mid to late june florida beach vacation

sao123

Lifer
thinking about a week vacation in florida (just me and my wife) while southwest has their chap summer tix ($60 each way per person)... have about $2500-3K to spend (car rental or airport shuttle + hotel + flights)

cant decide which beach to go to, and what other stuff to do while we are there.

flying in to FLL on southwest...prefer to be at a beach no further north than...boca raton
hotel recommendations?
things to do / places to go?

Islands of Adventure has some great rides if you like roller coasters and such.

I am heading down there myself early June and will hit that spot along with maybe another but doubt the beach since I prefer swimming in lakes and pools where you can open your eyes underwater and I remember it being a pain in the ocean.

Plus in lakes you are looking at most loosing a toe from a fish and not your life. 😉

I would actually look into whether Southwest flies into Tampa/Ft Myers and find a place on the Gulf Coast to stay. The beaches on the Gulf are going to be much calmer/less crowded/family friendly, and you're still only an hour - 1.5 hours away from Orlando and the major theme parks. Plenty of nice islands dotting the entire Gulf coast, of course I'm a little biased

until the OP gives us more details we have no idea. For some S. Beach is awesome, for others shuffleboard in Naples...then many love the themeparks.

I stayed at marco island last year, and didnt like the "no waves"...
It left razor sharp shells all over the nice soft sand, and we basically had to wear shoes just to swim.

I intend to spend most of our time near or around the beach...
disney / theme parks are of no interest to us.

We went to NASA already, so other than miami seaquarium, i dont know of anyhting else to do... but we pretty much want to be beach bums on the boardwalk for a week.

We native beach bums can pretty much walk on shattered glass after years of crushed shell/baking sand walking.

Sounds like you should look into the Keys. Probably not Key West as I wouldn't stay there with my family in tow, but one of the less populated ones would be fun. Just need to find a hotel with a beach, which isn't always prevalent in the Keys.

destin is where we like to go. It's not to far from us, nice beaches other than the jelly fish and the june grass. You just gotta time it right.

we usually go to panama city beach in august.... nice beaches for sure.

Just to let you know June is one of the raining months, Key Largo is a good place to go for nice beaches, and a little bit more driving will get you state parks and awesome beaches. I just recently Camped at Bahia Honda, freaking nice as hell 🙂 If you do want to go that south I recommend that place, you can rent kayaks and go to an off shore island and other stuff.

Quick sunset pic I got there

Ahh yes....the redneck riviera!

Panama city or Destin are decent. Daytona isn't too bad either and is within driving distance of Orlando if you want to throw a day of Disney or Universal Studios in the mix for a theme park combo. Of course you also have Busch Gardens (Tampa) and Sea World (Orlando).

If you like to scuba dive, you should check out some of the inland cave dives. (fresh water) Florida gets a lot of rain and has some cool places around. It all depends on where you end up choosing and whether or not you have a car.

I grew up in the panhandle (Tallahassee) and while I like my beaches more private, if you want beaches and some action, Destin is a good choice. It is quite touristy, but you're gonna have that anywhere you want action. Panama City Beach is a dump. That is where the high school kids go on spring break. I haven't been in many years, but that place is run down and not much to do. If you must stay in PCB, I'd suggest Inlet Beach. There is a wildlife preserve on the beach that separates the trash of PCB from Inlet Beach so it keeps the riff raff out. And you get the luxury of having PCB so close. And who doesn't want to go watch the wet t-shirt contests at La Vela?

If you want somewhere with a little more class I would suggest Seaside. Not much action, but there are good places to eat (not chain joints like Destin) and a more upscale environment.
