I am currently using Lenovo Y500. It is 5 Year old laptop and I want to upgrade to a new desktop.

Here is what I have in mind about the major components:

Intel 3.4 GHz LGA1150 4670 i5 4th Generation Processor (No overclocking intention)
Intel DH87RL 32GB DDR3 Intel Motherboard (may consider Raid 1 in future)
Intel SSD 520 240 GB (Can't go with other SDD OEM Ex: Samsung, as there is no service centers & I have a 2TB external HDD, 240 GB will be OK for me)
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1*8 GB (Intend to add another 8 GB in future so not going with 2*4 GB)
Corsair 400R Mid Tower Cabinet
Dell S2240L 21.5 inch
Corsair VS550 550 Watt PSU

Important things to be considered:

  1. Main usage: Crome,iTune,Office 2010,KM Player: HD Video playing, Occasional usage: QTP,Adobe Illustrator,Adobe Photoshop
  2. I have a home inverter,do I need a UPS ?
  3. I don't intend to overclock, will I need any extra cooling kit apart from the fans provided with 400R?
  4. Will this system play 9-10 GB video files smoothly?
  5. What will be the approx sub scores in WEI?
  6. How future proof will this PC be, in Years ?
  7. I intend to add a Graphics card in future if required

Welcome to the forums, somnath00000!

1. ok
2. not sure
3. not unless you want the CPU to be very quiet under load
4. size is irrelevant, what matters is bitrate, but yes it should handle it
5. WEI is irrelevant, but I'd guess about 7.5-7.7 for the RAM, CPU and disk, much less for the GPU since it's integrated
6. depends on what you do with it, but in general I'd say for office/work, such a system should last about 5 years before it really starts showing its age. If you start gaming on it, the CPU+motherboard+RAM will probably need upgrading sooner than that.

Is this something you're building yourself from parts or is it a prebuilt? If you're getting it for home use, building it yourself makes more sense. If the PC is something you need for your work i.e. it is directly influencing your income, I suggest buying an prebuilt OEM PC, possibly with an extended warranty service.

As with any build thread, please answer these (I filled in some for you):

1. What YOUR PC will be used for.
Main usage: Crome,iTune,Office 2010,KM Player: HD Video playing
Occasional usage: QTP,Adobe Illustrator,Adobe Photoshop

2. What YOUR budget is.
???

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
???

4. IF you're buying parts OUTSIDE the US, please post a link to the vendor you'll be buying from.
???

5. IF YOU have a brand preference.
Intel

6. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts
keyboard, mouse?
7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
Default

8. What resolution, not monitor size, will you be using?
1080p

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?
Now?

X. Do you need to purchase any software to go with the system, such as Windows or Blu Ray playback software?
Windows 7 64 or Windows 8 64?

CPU good choice
Motherboard typically you will find better options from third party brands; as for RAID 0, you can do it an any H87 or Z87 board
SSD the 520 is a pretty bad cost per gigabyte, Intel 330 should be better. But I don't really understand why the service center is relevant here? Can you elaborate?
RAM OK, but don't you have the budget for 2x8GB right away?
Case a bit overkill for your needs, to be honest
PSU a bit overkill in terms of the wattage rating, and not that high quality either, but an OK choice

Thanx for the response.

Myself from parts & for home use ..also I have my laptop in case of emergency.

I am stressing on service center because I had got the Samsung SSD 840 Pro for my laptop. Installed it, worked great for 3-4 Hrs and then crashed. There was no way I could get any support , so I had 2 return it to vendor (flipkart).

Also I may go for Raid 1 not 0

RAM :I can get right away too if its within my total budget.

Case: I went with it , since it may still be relevant to my needs if I upgrade in 5 Years time

PSU: Same logic as above

  1. 1000-1100 dollars
  2. India
  3. www.filpkart.com and www.snapdeal.com
  4. Intel
  5. I have mouse. Anyways I may go for Rapoo Wireless Optical Combo 9060
  6. In next 2 month
  7. Have all the relevant SW

Any part can be DOA, you just got a bad apple with the 840 Pro. It happens. However I still don't undestand why you need a service center for the SSD, if you get DOA just replace it at the store right? Like any other component.

Raid 0/1, both are supported on all H87 and Z87 boards.

Since you're buying in two months, I won't bother suggesting specific components just yet because prices and availabilities won't necessarily be the same then. Just a rough outline:

i5 Haswell
aftermarket cooler if you want it to be quiet
entry level H87 mATX or ATX board
240-256GB SSD
integrated graphics for now
1x8GB or 2x8GB DDR3
400-500W PSU, 80+ bronze
ATX case with modern features
DVD burner?
23-24" 1080p monitor (would prefer this over 22")

I it not easy to replace ...flipkart has 30 replacement warranty, same with snapdeal.

The after sell service is bad here

I wanted to finalize the exact components so that I can check the prices in local market and buy as I go....

Monitor can be Dell S series S2340L

DVD burner not required

The only thing that finalizing components 2 months in advance can do is cost you money. You of course need to have an idea of the general range of parts that you're looking at. At the same time however, you have to be flexible on the exact part because awesome deals come and go in a flash.

Why Prodigy? That just needlessly restricts you to use an ITX motherboard, and it's not really much smaller than a micro ATX tower. I would get mATX or ATX and enjoy the benefits of more expansion slots and flexibility.

Also, no point in locking in to a particular motherboard this early on. The H87 chipset is a good choice though.

The H87-PRO can't fit inside a Prodigy anyway. It is a typical ATX motherboard.

The Prodigy is slightly smaller than a typical micro ATX case. It has similar width to a micro ATX case but it has slightly less length.

There is a micro ATX version of the Prodigy called the Prodigy M.

When you factor in the feet and the handles, the Prodigy takes up as much space as typical microATX towers. Internally though, it is less spacious

Actually I am asking what is the basic requirement for such a machine Is it possible to get such a machine in form laptop ? -Do I have to go for 4th gen Or can get good value for money in 3rd gen processors too -WHAT SHOULD BE MY RANE TO CONSIDER SUCH A MACHINE WHICH SATISFY ABOVE REQUIREMENTS SAME AS YOU I AM NOT MUCH INTO A GAMING PC Plz Someone advice me Highly appreciated
