<< "It's possible that this child's death was a tragic accident. I've reflected long and carefully on the evidence," Judge John R. Alderman said in sentencing her to prison, followed by 20 years on probation. >>

How can this be an accident??

this is why it's possible it was an accident...

<< Otte has claimed that she has no memory of cramming her son in the microwave and turning the appliance on. Experts said that Otte suffers from epilepsy and that her seizures often are followed by blackouts of up to 50 minutes.

Lawyers on both sides acknowledged that what happened that night might never be known.
>>

<< Otte had stopped taking medication when she became pregnant, and Martinez told authorities that she had more than 50 seizures before and after the birth, including one time when she dropped the baby. >>

I honestly believe it was an accident. I mean c'mon, she could think of a less conspicuous way then putting it in a microwave and then going to bed and leaving her husband to find their baby in the microwave. Unless she is just really stupid.

A truly horrific killing, but how do you sentence someone to 5 years when you suspect it was an accident? I have a big problem with the judge's views, particularly in light of her medical history. If she had killed or been very violent before, I would have a different view.

SilverBack: That's a whole other story. Try reading the post, she suffered from a severe illness that caused her to act out of conciousness possibly. Why're you so fixated on this subject anyway?

<< A truly horrific killing, but how do you sentence someone to 5 years when you suspect it was an accident? >>

Well that's just it, if it was an accident over which she had no control then why is she serving any prison time at all? OTOH, if it was a malicious act then 5 years is too lenient.

I would have to wonder though, after she had the baby and could have resumed taking her medication, why didn't she?

<< Otte had stopped taking medication when she became pregnant, and Martinez told authorities that she had more than 50 seizures before and after the birth, including one time when she dropped the baby. >>

Hello?! Time to take the meds!

OK, I can see how this happened, she was had sever health issues. So why was she left to care for an infant if she had these health problems?? That's what I don't get. I can see how someone can be so out of it to let this happen, but who let her take care of this baby on her own? Someone who has seizures and blackouts should not be left alone to care for a child.

Well anyone with that many health issues shouldnt be having children, its bad for the gene pool, not that the south isnt already so interbred it makes a difference.....😉

Maybe someone should've know better than to buy a microwave big enough to fit a baby in. I look at my microwave, and no way can you fit a baby in...alright, you can fit a baby in, but then the cause of death wouldn't be because of the microwave...
