Yay or Nay?

I don't normally eat popcorn but I've heard it makes a great low calorie snack. Going grocery shopping, I decided to check it out and look at the nutrition labels. I ended up buying a box of the Orville Redenbachers[Gourmet Natural Butter 50% less fat] to try out since it appears each bag of popcorn[5.5 servings of 1cup/serving popped] is only about 110calories/bag. I was surprised at how large a bag it was for 110 calories. Is this for real or maybe my math is off? That bag was pretty filling...

Alternatively, an ounce of almonds is 160 calories and that amounts to about 24 almonds. Somethings gotta give. Are there any snacks I don't know about that are like this?

I like pistachios but I don't see why popcorn would be bad (unless you really load up the butter/salt).

Beef jerky is a great low calorie/high protein snack, but watch out, commercial brands like Jack Links have a lot of sodium. Best to check a natural foods store and see how theirs stacks up.

Hmmm. This is something to look into. I'm always looking for low-calorie, filling food items.

I think it has 5.5 servings @ 110 cals each. Sooo figure ~600 for the bag.

That sounds more ridiculous than 110 calories/bag. The box said 20cal/serving(1 cup popped)... 5.5 servings/bag(popped). It also shows servings based on just the kernel which was 2.5tbsp/bag @ 120cal.

Not the same exact item but their website doesn't provide nutrition facts:

http://www.orville.com/our-popcorn/microwave-popcorn-smartpop.jsp

"Orville Redenbacher's® SmartPop! Gourmet® microwave popcorn has just 100 calories per 6 cups and is 94% fat free, so you can snack without giving up the delicious, fresh-popped taste and aroma you love."

Yea I've read about that too... it's the bag not the popcorn so I've just assumed they've already fixed/addressed this issue since[article is 2 years old].

edit: I'd eat non-microwave popcorn if I could but I don't have a popcorn machine or whatever it's called and don't plan on getting one either for the forseeable future.

I stopped buying microwave popcorn after I reread that story. Everything gives you cancer, but when it's as easy as buying a $20 popcorn maker at wal-mart, and a bag of kernels for $3, maybe a tub of butter, you don't really have an excuse anymore.

I doubt they fixed a thing. There's still benzene in soda after 20 years of knowing about it.

Well if I feel popcorn is something I'll be eating a lot in the future, I'll get a popcorn maker, right now I'm just trying to figure out if my findings on it's low caloric content is true.

You can pop it on a stove in a pot.

Yes, pretty easy to do. Just a couple tablespoons of oil (I use olive oil for flavor), a pan, cover for pan, a good movie and I'm set for the night. I usually pop 2 cups of unpopped kernels, so it's just enough for me and the wife.

Damn - I recently started eating a bag of popcorn (with a whey protein drink) before bedtime as a substitute for a full course meal. Now it's linked to cancer???
Freakin' killjoys...

Yeah, but if you buy your own kernels and season it yourself, you're still in the clear. It takes a tiny bit more of work, but that's no so bad. It's interesting that they use diacetyl for the artificial butter flavoring. It's also interesting how it can vaporize and affect the lungs. I don't quite understand why it would do something like that.

I use olive oil too but that does not stop me from adding unsalted butter which does not stop me from adding salt. :p

One cup per person is a lot. One-third cup over fills a medium bowl (perhaps five cups).

Microwave popcorn is disgusting -it reeks and tastes weird. On top of that it's wasteful and kinda retarded what with all the packaging, dodgy ingredients and generally making something simple complicated for the sake of inflating the value of an otherwise minimally processed staple food. If a machine is desired for some reason to make bad popcorn, then rather opt for hot air -at least it does so without the crap (although the noise is maddening).

Microwave popcorn is disgusting-true. It's sitting in a chemical stew in a teflon bag.
