I'm really confused now... !
One guy says he warms his hands with microwaves, and others tell me the metal cage is the important thing, and now you tell me glass blocks microwaves???

Well I took an hour and went to a local appliance dealer. They called Sanyo themselves, and gave them all the model/damage info. As I suspected, there is no danger at all! The glass is cosmetic. The steel cage is important.
I don't think thats very cool that some on here were trying to scare us by emphatically claiming otherwise!!!

It is never recommended to use a damaged microwave oven. You state that this is an expensive microwave oven ... why did you not have it repaired?

Why didn't they use a tester to determine the amount of radiation if any is leaking?

So, you took all of an hour to talk to a dealer (Walmart?). You could post on ATOT, but not call Sanyo *yourself*?

Since we were just trying to scare you, perhaps you should just stand closer to the microwave.

It is not cosmetic. If you are looking through that front wire mesh and something inside cooking like cheese bubbles or pops throwing off parts of hot cheese through that mesh and it hits your eye, you will with that glass were there. Ever look at the glass on the inside of a door on a microwave ? always covered with stuff.

I like to save money too, but in your situation I would replace it. My microwaves keypad quit working and so I removed all the keypad and timer modules and just installed a toggle switch on the front to control it, but I kept all the safety features, switches , interlocks, etc in place.

The answer is short and simple. Replace it if the damage results in any gaps in the metal (including metal mesh in front) that are larger than there originally. That includes if the door frame is warped so the back metal portion doesn't sit flush against the cage.

This model is about $250 (oven, steam, etc). The front metal cage is sandwiched in 2 layers of glass. The purely cosmetic outer layer broke. It was hit by a chair leg, which slightly dented the cage. There is no Walmart here. We took it to a Sanyo certified microwave dealer. They called the world headquarters of Sanyo to double check if it was safe.

You are a tool.

hand != eye

His hand may be fine, not sure if his eyes would be had he put his head in the oven.
