Microwave Mishap -- My fault or microwave's fault?

It's long grain rice and water. Directions on box specify 28~ minutes. Of course I should not leave the microwave unattended, but I did. After an indeterminate amount of time from an adjacent room I could smell smoke. I come out to see it barreling out of the microwave.

I have cooked this exact same rice using the exact same type of bowl many times with no problems. I don't know what happened, any ideas?

I checked the model number and I found a couple of complaints about fire, but the microwave was not recalled.

28 minutes in the microwave 😱?

In 2-quart microwaveable bowl, combine rice mix, Special Seasonings, 2.5 cups water and 1 tablespoon of margarine or butter. Microwave uncovered, at HIGH 25-28 minutes or until white rice is tender. Let stand 3-5 minutes before serving.

It wasn't in there for the entire 28 minutes. I stopped it as soon as I noticed the smoke. I've also ate this same rice prepared the same.

WTF! You need to do a reality check every once in a while. It doesn't take 28 minutes to do rice on top of the stove. Just stop. Take the blue pill and strap your helmet on. Do not attempt this at home. Remember, there are kitchen professionals waiting to feed you.

I don't use the stove or oven more than once or twice a year. Therefore I am unaware of the normal cooking time of a specific item on a completely unrelated device. The rice wasn't in there for the entire 28 minutes either. I might not even have set it for 28 minutes, somewhere 24-28, although in any case it still did not run for the entire duration.

Also, I take the white pill.

And as soon as I cross the threshold of being wealthy enough to hire an assistant, a cook is definitely first on the list.

There's several levels to being a cook. The most basic is being able to feed yourself. This is the minimum level you need to reach before leaving home. You have failed. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.

Your first problem is you are trying to make rice.....in a MICROWAVE!

Buy a rice cooker or cook the damn rice on a stove.

And just how did you fit 2.5 cups of water in that container?

The bowl holds 3.125 cups. There's not a lot of rice in the package.

No, he apparently never buys anything you can't put in a microwave. Sad but, I always suspected there were people like this.

You can cook lots of things in the microwave. Pasta, rice, eggs... almost anything a person would eat in a normal diet. The microwave is a perfectly acceptable means of preparing food.

Perhaps in whatever pink skied fairy tale planet you live on. Cooking for yourself (with a stove and oven) is a basic skill like making your bed, washing your clothes, washing the dishes. This is something you NEED to know not, something you can slide on. Suck it up and learn the skills you should have had before you got out of HS.

Where does it dictate I must use a stove and oven to prepare my food?

Nop. MW can be used as a supplementary device to aid in the cooking process.. but preparing food solely with the help of MW is unacceptable.

Why is it unacceptable?

the fuck? my first assumption, is that the directions would have been 25minutes, 30-50% power.

...but 25 minutes High? ridiculous. obvious typo. lol

bhanson, you are a troll, right?

I'm getting trolled, right guys?

It is working, by the way.

well...you should learn how to use a stove. rice in microwave...25 minutes. sad.

if you're too lazy to take out a pot and put water in it, cook for 25 minutes, then your generation is a failure. all of you. 🙁
