I've had a few micro USB cables flake out on me, mostly the end breaking/bending or the cable becoming frayed. All micro USB cables are decidedly not created equal.

oops! i meant .99 or 99 cents per cable.
 
My oldest micro (htc original) usb cable still works. A cheap microusb cable i bought broke down, one of the data lines was damaged. Another cable i have now for almost a year is still working.

Actually, the micro usb connector and receptacle is a very good design IMHO. The contact springs and the locking mechanism are part of the cable and not part of the receptacle that is part of the tablet or smartphone. This way, it is always the cable that wears out while the receptacle in the smartphone continues to function. It is by design that the cable wears out more quickly then the receptacle on the tablet or smartphone. Maybe you bought cheap cables. The one i bought that broke down was hardly flexible.
 
All Samsung cables that came with my S3/Note 2/Note 3/Note 12.2 still working fine..
 
Odd I'd never had an OEM cable stop working - whether it be Asus, LG, Samsung.

I will say 99% of the 'authentic' Samsung cables out there are fake generics.
 
I've have no issue with OEM cables in general, but my TouchPad cable went bad, my Amazon Basics went bad, my Mediabridge went bad, and a short 2 ft Samsung cable went bad on me.

My oldest Moto Droid cable still going strong, and same with the microUSB that came wtih my Nokia N82.

With that said its good that the spring mechanism is on the cable and not the port itself, so you don't need to replace a port that often, but still... a flat connector like Lightning would be far more durable and less prone to loosening up.
