They better not touch Blu-Ray, I could give a rats ass about DVD technology once Blu-Ray or something similar comes out.

Then again I guess people that would go for something like this aren't the type that drop $200 on their DVD players. If MS can put out DVD players for $50 that can play these, AND offer a savings vs renting they might have a shot.

I certainly won't be buying one, Netflix is just too convenient.

Microsoft wants it to become a standard feature on all new players, so as people buy new players the installed base will increase. They don't have to release the discs at the same time the feature is available on the players, they can wait until there are a lot of players out there.

And since it uses DRM they could set the play limitations at whatever they want - 1 play, 3 plays, 5 plays, whatever. With the self-destructing discs you could watch it as many times as you wanted within a short timeframe.

I won't be buying any of them either, Hollywood Video is less than a mile down the road and the MVP plan is a lot cheaper than $3-4 a movie. :)

If you're going to pirate a movie you don't have to buy it, just rent it. I guess you can't teach common sense...

OnDemand will be better and combating piracy and filling this niche IMO. If they're going to have to buy a new box anyway it makes more sense to just rent the box from the cable or baby bell company and just get the movie from them.
