I recently installed Word 2002 from the WorksSuite 2003 disk on a Windows Me machine (Duron 750, 192Mb RAM). I now have a rather serious problem when I edit documents in Word. Whether I use the scroll bar or mouse wheel, Word will hang. Both keyboard and mouse freeze and I have to reboot the machine. I have been able to reproduce the error on a number of occassions. The problem seems to be worse with my existing Word 2000 files. I thought that Word 2002 was backwards compatible with Word 2000 documents???

Is there a fix/ patch for this problem? Has anyone else eXPerienced this problem??

Hope you can help,

Jim

Had a similar problem at one point on my work machine. Load up a document (any document, not just an old Word doc), attempt to scroll and Word would crash. It would not bring down the whole machine (WinXP Pro), but Word would crash every time.

Turned out the IT dept had pushed out bad drivers for the printers. Uninstalling and purging the printers fixed the problem.

Doubt if that is your problem, but hey, its what happened to me.

This is starting to drive me crazy! Troubleshooting driver problems on this computer isn't proving successfull. Any ideas?

OK. Here is what I have found.

Word XP only crashes when working with Word 2000 documents.

It crashes EVERY time when scrolling a Word 2000 doc. Usually within 15 secs of scrolling. Nevery immediately, only after few secs.

It only crashes when scrolling with the mouse or wheel. It never crashes when I use the Pg Up, Pg Down keys.

I did a selective startup on Win Me and removed all but Explorer, Sys Tray and ScanRegistry. Still crashes the same.

Removed Word XP, Installed Word 2000. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL. Must be problem with Word XP.

Surely there are no issues with reading Word 2000 docs on Word XP. Microsofts site doesn't indicate any problems with scrolling in Word 2K docs.

Any ideas???

jjsole - thanks for the tip. I got all excited when I read your post. TweakUI is installed on this system - so maybe...just maybe I thought. Sadly though Smooth Scrolling is disabled in TweakUI. I guess enabling it won't make any difference??

Interestingly I only have problems with Word 2K docs in WordXP. Explorer, Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, etc are unaffected.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

U know, I had this same problem when I moved an image in Powerpoint, with the cursor keys. It hard-locked my system everytime.

Until, I used the latest leaked drivers for the Radeon 8500.

Now I have no such problems.

Try upgrading your video drivers, see if that helps.

(Oh and I use XP)

Thanks for the help. It was the video drivers! I guess I the video card drivers should have been the first thing I should have tried but just assumed it was a Word 2002 problem, since scrolling was fine in other apps. I updated the drivers and all is well now. Thanks for pointing (pushing) me in the right direction dem0nic :)
