Microsoft Word Crashing Computer

Every time I try to open microsoft word 2000 the computer crashes. When I open it the first box pops up with registration and stuff and then nothing happens. When i hit ctl-alt-del it says the system is dangerously low on resources. The system is 950mhz pIII with 256mb ram and windows me. Then it restarts, all the other programs work fine. By the way the computer has never been connected to the internet. I have tried reinstalling it and it does the same thing. Any suggestains?

hi, can you try using msconfig to disable everything from the startup and save the changes, then restart, then open word 2000 and see what happens, does word 2000 open when you boot into safemode? when you reinstalled, you reinstalled office 2000 right? did you happen to change the name of the directory under program files, then do a clean install of office 2000? Also, do you have a lot of special configurations in word, such as when you type a few letters it will fill in the word you constantly use?

I didnt change the directory. I have have microsoft works and one disk has microsoft word 2000. There are no special cconfigurations in word. I have not tried it in safe mode yet and i have not tried disableing all the tasks in msconfig. I will try that today and see if i can get it to work.

1. Close all word windows
2. Look for the file normal.dot and rename it to normal.dot.old
3. restart word and see if it works.

Just do a search for files, and search for the file named: normal.dot

once it's found, just delete it and once you reopen word, everything will work fine.

The normal.dot file is a template file that word uses that gets corrupt from time to time on word 2000. I've had to delete it many times and every time word works fine. 🙂

I will try that in the next couple of days when I have time access that computer. Open Office will work for now.
