From my understanding this restriction does not apply to Windows Vista.

Welcome to the forums, AndreGeek.

Old article on Vista licensing.

"the OEM license that comes with Vista is indeed similar to the Windows XP OEM license in that it forbids any kind of transfer"

However, the "retail" license allows you to "transfer your license of Windows Vista to another user provided that you uninstall the original copy and do not keep any of the materials from the original installation."

I don't know if anything's changed since then, and if it hasn't then the "System Builder" ones (which are basically OEM) can only be installed on one system. Fine for building a rig for your parents to use for several years, but not fine for any enthusiast who expects to upgrade/replace their rig fairly often.

Anyone know if the dvd allows you to install the 32 bit version of Vista Basic? I ask because since this is basically an OEM copy, which version it lets you install.

Any one else having problems buying of their site? I keep getting a "Sorry, an error occurred. The credit card information you have indicated is invalid or incorrect" (I doubled check, no errors) or address doesnt match" etc. My cards work just fine at newegg, zipzoomfly, amazon, buy.com etc.

Yah, I'm looking for a cheap 64 bit version as well. So close, but this is indeed a decent deal for most people out there.

Are you guys sure they'll send you the 64-bit disc for an OEM version? Cause if you read the page it says

64-bit DVD
If you bought Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, or Business as a retail, packaged product, and you would like a DVD of 64-bit software media to install on your PC, please choose your language:

http://www.microsoft.com/windo...ta/editions/64bit.mspx

I know that it wouldn't accept my key when I tried it with the copy of Vista that came with my Dell PC.

AFAIK, OEM Vista is 32 or 64bit only. One version only for OEM. Assume OEM versions are 32bit only unless 64bit only is specified. (e.g. Link to Newegg's OEM Vista pages).

I tried to use my OEM Vista Business key (Newegg purchase) for a 64bit alternate verison at Microsoft and it didn't work. However, my retail 32bit Home Premium key from RetailEdge 2007 did.

I've come across reports that the key is not 32 or 64bit specific, i.e. you should be able to use the key for either version. The catch is getting the 64bit version!

I did use my 32bit Home Premium key for my 64bit alternate version from Microsoft, so the above is apparently correct, at least for retail versions.

MS will only ship out the 64-bit media, if you input a RETAIL 32-bit Vista key. However, if you obtain 64-bit media "otherwise"... you should be able to install it using a 32-bit OEM key, if you so desire. The keys are interchangable for installation between 32-bit and 64-bit. I have no idea if the OEM install media is different or not than retail install media.

I would like to try this on a new rig but we game a lot, (some older games). I think I better stick with win XP home upgrade. Best deal I can find on the XP is like an "office type store with a $20 off $75 or $20 off $100 coupon.

Any better deals on the "cheap XP upgrade"? Hardware vendor's witha promo code?, student deals? Tia.

If your address has a numeric street in it, try writing out the whole number. For instance, the street I live on is 56th Ave, but I have to write fiftysixth Ave for it to work at Micro Center's web site.
