Forging for formats
Microsoft has been marshalling to gain widespread device support for Windows Media formats. The strategy, in part, is a way of spurring consumer adoption in the face of content provider resistance, say analysts. The software titan estimates that 30 million devices will support Windows Media file formats by the end of the year.

"Microsoft's strategy is to get format ubiquity because once they're the most popular format, customers will demand that format," Rosoff said. "Then content companies, producers and distributors will have to buy the Windows tools necessary to create it."

just what we need...

More importantly, the way Pioneer will support new Corona audio and video codecs could be crucial to another part of Microsoft's strategy, particularly if more device manufacturers follow along. Pioneer will be using Microsoft's digital-rights management (DRM) built into Windows Media 9 file formats to prevent illegal copying of downloaded audio and video content.

as soon as? :p

Anyway, mp3 is still the most common format on Kazaa and such, and as long as that does not change they can't force their format on anyone.

When is that going to happen? It seems they've been in beta forever and the beta's always been really unstable for me.

Yea, but given a choice between MS's closed format and the other big competing format (ogg vorbis), I'll take the free format any day of the week.

Well I guess no more upgrades for my WMP after version 8.

screw that....6.4 ownz :)

6.4 is the greatest.

Agreed. Works great... Why were we supposed to upgrade again? Do the newer ones even offer anything new, besides being slower, clunkier, uglier, and incorporating DRM?

yay tieing! since the gov't refuses to prosecute and the damage would already be done by the time they got done even if they did why not? network effects of the desktop OS monopoly continue to rear their ugly heads.

I use WMP 8.0 and it works great. Not sure what you people are doing, but I like how you can organize your playlists and such. I think that maybe only one person here has actually given it more than 10 seconds before declaring it junk. It runs quick on mine...

I have some videos encoded with a Microsoft designed codec that will not play on Windows XP but play perfectly fine on Windows 98 with WMP 6.4 so that means WMP 8 sucks.
