Microsoft Windows in Television and Movies?

After watching some television shows this past week that had characters using computers (ie. Alias, Boston Public and 24) it got me to thinking about computers and OS's used in television and movies.

As much as I can remember I have rarely, if ever, seen Microsoft Windows on a desktop PC being used by the characters. It's usually either a Mac or what appears to be a fictional OS that looks really cool but doesn't exist in real life.

I can see the point of a fictional OS as it adds a sense of technolgical advancement especially in science fiction movies, but what's with all the Macs? With the proliferation of Macs on TV you would think that everyone that is anyone would be using a Mac!

And why the scarcity of the Windows OS? If I were to venture a guess I'd say it's because, despite its widespread use in the real world, its GUI just doesn't look cool enough for television and movies. Prior to XP it's pretty boring, and XP looks as if it were made by Fisher Price in my opinion.

And on another note: anybody remember that Alias episode (it was a while back) where that nerdy guy from SD6 gave her that fake business card and instructed her to place it on the bad guy's monitor and it was supposed to break through and give her access through the firewall?
MOWHAHAHA!!!
I'm all for the cool techno gadgets but that one was way out there. Place it on the monitor to break through the firewall? They should hire better consultants for their writers.

<< Mac's in movies and TV is just product placement. Apple pays to have them use/show Macs.

Bingo
Apple pays to try and make people think that people actually use them!
which of course we all know is a lie. No one uses apple computers.

You're probably right. Must make Steve Jobs feel real proud to have all his work reduced to a stage prop! 😉

I HATE product placements. Once I saw a TV show that went something like this:

Guy: Look at us. We are poor. We don't have any money to raise this kid.
Girl: So what are we going to do?
Guy: I don't know. We'll have to move out of this house.

Then, right behind them, was a brand new, sparkling Apple G4, with a 22" LCD. :|:| Urge ... to ... kill ... rising .... :|:|

Correction: No one sane uses apple computers 😀

Lol, as if the crappy OS X interface is any less childish than xp's.

I think it's really interesting that it's always an apple computer, even when used negatively.

For instance, in the movie Fight Club, when they blow up a computer store, you can clearly see a Mac being blown up (or maybe it's a box that says Mac).

I wouldn't say "no one" uses them. I'll bet my left nut that everything you see in the theaters and broadcast nationally on TV ("live" TV excluded) was edited on a Mac. Mac's are a niche product.

I remember in Office Space there was some Quasi-Mac-Windows thing for the OS. The windows had Mac borders, but the cursor was clearly a Windows cursor and it went to the C:\> prompt after shutting down, just like Windows 3.x.

<< Have you seen what they use on Dark Angel? It looks saaaweet. Cyber-geek gets Jess Alba. Not fair. >>

I've never really watched that show, but I can guess that what they use probably looks really cool. Too bad OS's in real life don't look as cool as they do in movies. I guess that's why I fool around with LiteStep from time to time.

Let's see . . . they use Windows in True Lies. At least, the international terrorist who's computer they hack into does.

And the Terminator is programmed in COBOL, if you watch it's OS screen carefully. 😉

I'm trying to think of some others.
