So my wife wanted a brand new laptop to replace her Dell Vista laptop I bought her in 2008ish. I said, SURE, but be READY FOR Windows 8!!! She was like, "Whatever"... So we hit Best Buy and I told her to get a Touch Screen. Her reply? "I don't want one with a touch screen." I said, "Whatever....you'll want it if you have 8"

She didn't listen to me and picked a REALLY nice HP laptop out that didn't have a touch screen. :( The laptop is nice in every way.....except for the POS OS on it. I'm very proficient in Windows, but am constantly having to jump through hoops to disable the default Windows 8 apps. For instance, the photo viewing app that is installed by default....you can open an image with it, but it won't allow you to view other images in the same directory like Windows Photo Viewer can, so we switched the default program back to that.

I just wish they would have taken Windows 7 and added Metro to "touch-screen enable" computers as an option rather than trying to reinvent the way people use the hardware.

I mentioned laptops and trackpads. I mentioned excessive lift and drag of pointing devices of mouse input. I mentioned that there is more of it in 8 for the nature of the menus. That is why she should have listened. All of my quips about the good and bad of 8 is there, IN THE RIGHT FORUM.

It doesn't take brains to go CL. It just takes a good manual so you can RTFM when you must.

Unfortunately, windows CL is based on a bunch of loosely coded powershell commandlets and vbscript to envoke whatever roles/features a particular system has installed. If the commandlets don't do everything you require, you're SOL....and they often don't do everything other tools or utilities may. They're designed to make it easier so you don't have to code dot net....but it would almost be easier if you called those classes and wrote your own scripts to bypass the Microsoft junk so you aren't stuck trying to perform a command line function that doesn't exist with whatever tool you happen to learn/find first.

I think that Microsoft has finally discovered that businesses will NEVER upgrade to Windows 8.whatever until they have a way to disable the "Modern UI" Start screen and put the old Start menu back WITHOUT adding third party software.

Businesses are cheap, and do not want to pay to retrain their employees. Hell... just getting them off of Windows XP has been painfully difficult.

As usual the hardware is driving it, and I'm starting to hear people change their attitude toward 8 as the masses start working with it. As long as home systems are coming with Windows 8 pre-installed, you will have people that eventually get comfortable with it. That attitude will spread. I've had numerous people at work ask me when we are upgrading to Windows 8 because Windows 7 is so "old".

I felt like an idiot the first time I used it, and am still amazed that out of the box there were invisible side menus (charms?) that require holding your mouse pointer off the screen to access.

there is a TON of really useful stuff packed into 8. Which really makes me mad that they FUBARd the GUI so badly.

Based on some quick Googling, XP still has a greater market share than Windows 8, Windows Vista, Mac OS X, and Linux... combined. Which is quite impressive for an 13 year old OS. Though it comes with a whole host of problems. Part of the issue is that desktops have reached a "good enough" stage, meaning the average home or business user isn't encouraged to upgrade. Microsoft doesn't have the tools to bake in planned obsolescence like Apple does. If MS stops providing updates to XP, it will cause a whole host of problems. But on the other hand, doing so might force people to finally phase it out.


As for Windows 8.2, turns out people like what they're familiar with. A lot of the backlash towards Windows 8 is it is a discombobulated OS. Metro is fantastic for tablets but I've never liked it for desktop use. Having one GUI to rule them all doesn't make a lot of sense. Especially for businesses. Which is why Apple doesn't run iOS on its desktops, or OS X on its tablets. I think it's a good move on their part and encourage some folks to replace Windows 7.

My wife's laptop came with it, and after 6 months she still hates it. Go Microsoft!


..and yea, I'm too selfish to give her one of my Win7 keys for it ;)

I'm surprised at the claims that XP has a higher market share currently, especially since April 8th, 2014 is the end date. A ton of people are reporting that the updates have already ceased for them(the windows update services just pins svchosts.exe at 100%). While there are workarounds to the issue most people have probably just given up on the updates or the OS completely.

Just echoing what MMNTech said, the whole OS is designed for a tablet. Would you install an iPhone iOS 7 on your desktop or laptop PC and have that as the operating system? That's what microshit did and they've been trying to unfuck it ever since (Windows 8.0 --> 8.1 ---> 8.2 soon)

8.1 "grant" you the ability to boot into desktop mode instead of that POS Metrosexual interface.

8.2 will...give you the start menu back. :whiste:

Booting into desktop with a start menu, who would have thought :colbert:
