Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical

I need your advice before I take this back to store for refund. I had a memorex scrolling mouse before this one. Worked fine. I bought this one works except for the scroll button. It came as a usb with a ps2 adapter. Scroll is detected and works as usb, not detected, does not work as PS2. The left/right buttons work both modes, movement is fine in both modes. I hate to give up a usb port when I have the free ps2 port. Any thoughts?
