Apple will be around for a while. They have lots of money and Apple fans are more diehard than AMD fanboys. The speed difference argument is dumb. Apple has never marketed a gamers machine. That may change with the new G5 though.

They don't have lots of money. They hemmorage more and more cash every year.

Speed difference is not dumb. The small niche market that Apple maintains is composed of professionals who NEED speed. Video editors, graphics designers, etc. Every bit of processing power counts, and Apple simply isn't supplying it. More and more of those professionals are beginning to switch over, and as PCs and PC software continue to surpass that of Apples, they're losing more and more marketshare.

For every soccer mom whom their stupid ad campaigns and art-deco design attracts, there's 5 professionals who realize the futility of continuing to work on them.

That's the essense of doomed.

Hemmorage cash? Last I heard Apple was one of the few companies that has actually kept posting profits (reduced profits but profits none the less). And If you are going to cite a niche market it would help your argruement more if you understood said market. ;) Speed is always a good thing when it comes to editing but software is King and stability is Queen. And in the past 16-24 months FCP has been on fire and only becomes more and more popular. FCP is not the end all, be all of NLE's but nothing can match it's price/performance ratio. And that gap just got quite a bit wider with the release of FCP 4 which is easily over $2k worth of software all rolled into the low, low price of $999. FCP is eating more and more into Avid's once ironclad (and Mac hardware based) dominance in the editing section of the post industry. $40k Avid setups are being replaced with $15k FCP setups. That doesn't sound like video/film pros jumping fence to the PC to me.

I can't speak for graphic artists 'cause that's not my field, but saying that there is any note worthy migration of video/film editors from Macs (either running Avid or FCP) over to PC based NLE's, is absolutely laughable. If you want to see an exodus watch Avid users migrate to FCP.

EDIT: damn unwanted smiley...

I can speak for the field. I'm going into graphics design, I'm taught by graphics designers, who have day jobs or freelance in video editing, 3D rendering, or design, and even the most ardent mac-lovers among them are fully aware that it's a dying cause.

No, you can't speak for the field because I could easily say the exact opposite and be correct in my opinion also. Sorry, try using some FACTS (Like I did, when I proved you wrong about apple losing more and more money every year!)

I think it's funny that people think that nobody uses Apple computer because thy only have 5% market share. In a nation with 100 million computer users, that's 5,000,000 Macintoshes.

That number continues to dwindle though. I predict 1% market share by 2006, and Apple being relagated to being a full-time music service by 2010.

My world is such a happy place.

It's hovered around 5% for years now...

No it hasn't. It's been slowly dropping ever since MS began making more stable OS's and since the processing speed gap between Macs and PCs has begun to become so far apart.

Final Cut Pro will see an x86 version. I can FEEL it. And as soon as that happens, you'll hear Apple's death knell.

While FCP is nice, I can work just as well with something like Vegas Video 4.0b or Avid Xpress 3.5. FCP isn't the be all, end all for video editing. Besides, it is made by Apple isn't it? It'll never see the light of day on a PC.

I dunno. I say that half-kidding, but at the same time, with the number of screw ups that Apple has had in their history, I could see them at a board meeting...

Jobs: "You know how much money we could make if we sold a version of Final Cut Pro on PC?"
Some random intern: "Won't that kill our company?"
Jobs: "SILENCE, NONBELIEVER!"

::Jobs proceeds to pull a lever, sending the intern down a trapdoor towards the incinerator::

OMFG, I just about spewed pop all over my keyboard on that one.

I've never bought a mac before, and probably wont have the money to for a long time. If I were in the market for a laptop though, I would consider an iBook much more seriously than an x86 laptop. I want a *nix based computer, and Apple has been very innovative and has helped to bring (desktop) credibility to Open Source community with their BSD derived OS X. They are also slapping the RIAA in the face with iTunes, and helping to change the way the recording industry does business.

No matter what laptop I buy, I'll be putting Linux on it so the actual base system matters little to me. I would support Apple for the above reasons, in hope that they will continue to provide such things to the consumer.
