First Bungie, then RARE, now Sega ? Could be interesting if this does happen.

Sega Shares Rise: Microsoft, Game Developer Deny Buyout Plans
By Hiroshi Suzuki, Kyoko Suzuki and Tomoko Yamazaki

Tokyo, Nov. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Sega shares rose as much as 17 percent on speculation Microsoft Corp., the world's largest computer software maker, may buy out the Tokyo-based company, investors said.

Sega spokesman Hiroyuki Soga said he hadn't heard Microsoft plans to buy out the video-game developer. Microsoft Japan spokesman Kazushi Okabe said it he is not aware of any plans.

Sega shares rose as much as 200 yen, or the exchange-imposed limit, to 1,385 yen in afternoon trading and ended 134 yen, or 11.3 percent higher, at the 3 p.m. market close.

``Sega's moving on the rumor that Microsoft may be the buyer of the cross-shareholding with CSK,'' said Toshio Ogawa, a manager at Izumi Securities Co. ``There is a slight possibility of this, but it's more that investors are using this rumor to buy back their shares.''

CSK Corp. is Sega's largest shareholder with about 22.4 percent of the game developer's stock, according to Bloomberg Data. "

I will be very disapointed if this happens...
Microsoft is buying up every game developer that ever amde anything good, and forcing them to work on their lame XBOX, depriving all us others of the good games we deserve!

Bungie was an excellent choice. They have possibly a very bright future.

But Rare and Sega are both has-beens. Their glory days are long gone.

It looks like microsoft will see their console succeed despite massive revinues lost left and right. (Microsoft loses a little over 100 dollars on every system it sells)
Depressing that a company can use sheer brute force to choke out the smaller companies (ie. nintendo)

by any means necessary. Their only problem is the people's hate against the company. They have the best console out there by far with the best value yet people do there best to keep others away from their products (which usually are one of the best out there, if not the best) because they did something someone didnt like.

Sony does the same. They got pissed at companies putting up XBOX and GCN promo materials before launch and threatened to lower shipments to that place if they didnt scale it back. Lower shipments = less profits and since the ps2 is selling in absurd amounts they are forced to comply.

The console hardware never makes profit. That's just the way the console market economics work.
I don't think any other console loses quite that much...but they rarely make any significant money on the hardware.

The console market makes it's money in software and licsening fees.

Microsoft bought Rare becuase they think they can use the talent and IP acquired to make good games that will sell enough to make a profit.
If they bought Sega it would be for the same reasons.

dude, how about MS tries buying out square or something? i want to buy an xbox, but i don't see any RPG's worth playing on it. i know there are great fps, sports, and fighting games, but one can only go so long without a good RPG.

I'm personally glad this is happening. I hate how developers make a game for a system and then make there 3 other games for another system etc. I want to buy a system and know that the developer i like WILL continue to make games for it. This is the reason i havent bought a system yet because i like certain franchises but they are spread over the 3 damn systems. i want shinobi but it's on the damn ps2, i want metroid prime but it's on the damn gc, i want halo but it's on the damn xbox...MS needs to buy all the good devs so i can buy 1 damn system and play all the good games, franchises etc.

sounds like a winning plan! that would be sweet, shinobi, halo, metroid prime all on one game system :D

Yeah, no competition is the answer. I think the minute ANY of the systems become the only option prices would increase for games, accessories, etc. Competition is good for us, the consumer. You think we'd be buying Intel processors for less without AMD trying to cut in? Dont think so...

neither rare or sega are has beens... On avg, Rare sells over 2mil copies of a game they put out. Sega has made more money since they ditched their hardware format than ever before. They are an awesome developer/publisher. They have monkey ball, sonic collection, sega sports, sonic adventure, sega gt, crazy taxi, skies of arcadia, virtua fighter, PSO, etc..... that's more than enough awesome games for anyone.

I imagine that Sega wouldn't mind seeing MS kick Sony's ass.
Might be some sweet revenge for the trouncing of the Dreamcast (which was, IMHO, a MUCH superior system than its true competition, the PS1).

Sega better come up with better games than JSRF. I just popped that in b/c it was free, and that is the most retarded game I have ever played. I can see why they give it away, since no one is going to buy it.

Sega is losing money, still, so I'm not too surprise. I don't have a game console, probably never will, so this doesn't concern me a bit.

I hope Nintendo finally dies.

I think Sega still makes some great games, it still seems that whenever I go into an arcade (which isnt often) the games I am attracted to are Sega. I also liked Dreamcast a lot too

That's only your opinion. My opinion says that their stuff is not the best.

i'm guessing somewhere in the near future nintendo will eventually go the way of sega as well. i like nintendo and some of their games are very good but system-wise, nahhhhhhhhh. if MS eventually buys a few of the good developers and their sales rise, i don't see a market for nintendo here in the U.S. (of course they will still have it in japan). but wouldn't that be pretty sweet if nintendo backed sony and sega backed microsoft? we can have a second generation nintendo vs sega, but this time using the money of the big boys ;)

Heck...the Dreamcast was in ways superior to the PS2. Graphics had a bigger texture memory and built in antialiasing in the graphics chip.
