Microsoft TechNet $168

hm Windows 8 would be nice I suppose but to go off topic I've been trying to find a way to go back to Windows XP but retain use of my 8GB RAM. XP64...

Mainly because when I peg all four cores the mouse and other programs aren't allocated sufficient processing power and start lagging (Windows XP's scheduler always seemed more fair in those regards), because they un-prioritized launching of Task Manager from Highest Priority to Normal Priority, and because I can't stand the new Explorer's List View doesn't equally space the columns of folders...
 
I am pissed at Technet for once again they dropped the number of uses per subscription.

Originally it as 10 for professional
Then it was 5 for professional
Now it is 3 for professional
(2 for standard).

I don't need 5 for professional, 3 is really enough, but it just pisses me off how they can charge more for a product and then change the terms of service on you after they have already taken your money and there is nothing you can do about it.

It just grates me the wrong way.
 
i dont understand why they made cuts to existing memberships either, they did to mine. it was unprofessional to me to suddenly cut the number of keys i had available without my notice.

with that said, i think theyre just trying to get people to stop using technet accounts across multiple households. having the limit at 2 or 3, even though you can activate each key 10+ times, really keeps the program from being abused.

whats nice is, i still have keys from my old tech sub, and i think ill reorder soon to get the hot price... which will bring me another set of keys for the old apps i have now. doesnt pay to reorder a sub! 😉
 
Is it even worth bothering with anymore? I had looked at getting into it awhile back but found they were cutting things and sounds like they cut even more.
 
This time around I'll be printing all my keys and just sign up for a new sub. I've been renewing for years and only lost keys, not gained any.

I've never "lost" keys even when a sub expires. All my keys for the past 7 years are still there from my expired technet accounts. I just can't download anything.

Just watch out with XP64: it is Windows Server 2003 in disguise. You'll have a hard time finding drivers for hardware since it doesn't support normal 32 bit XP drivers. I've been trying to get several machines at work upgraded from XP64 to Win7-64 because it is such an inconvenient OS. I'd prefer to run Vista, personally...
 
A few questions, if you will.

I have 4 computers at home, 3 of which get used only on occassion. I would like them all to be on Win7, but only my main is. If I purchase this standard version I will be given 2 keys for Win7 that can be activated 10x. Can I use one key on all four computers? At the end of my 12 month subscription will my computers no longer be activated, or will they be just fine, only if I decide to reinstall Win7 will I be screwed since my 12 months is up? Or do the activations last a lifetime?

Lastly, the 2 keys, is that for each version of Win7? Say, can I get 2 keys for Pro and 2 for Ultimate or is it 2 max for all Win7 products?

I'm really not trying to take advantage of this program. My other 3 PC's are used for audio measurements, a garage PC I use for music and internet browsing while doing woodworking out there and the last is my laptop that might get used once a month. I know, I should buy 4 copies of Win7 (not). I'm just trying to figure out if this will be worth purchasing in a situation like mine.

You get 2 keys for every single product/edition of Windows; even the "N" versions. The keys are for both 32 and 64-bit installs; there's no distinguishing between them. AFAIK, you can re-activate them each 10x, but you cannot activate the keys simultaneously (think about if you actually went and bought 2 physical copies, and hence got 2 keys.) At the end of the sub, you are no longer allowed access to download the ISO's nor ask for unused keys, but the keys you already claimed will work and activate fine.

Honestly, between Ultimate, Pro and Home Premium, you should be fine.

That said, I believe people are 'technically' not allowed to use these to install software onto production machines or for daily use, but that has never stopped anyone. It also hasn't stopped the masses of people re-selling the keys on eBay and the like, which is why we can't have nice things (AKA Microsoft cutting the number of keys available to everyone.)

Sorry for my ignorance! I have four computers. I get the two keys, install Win7 on two of my computers and activate them. They are connected to the internet. Then, the next day I use the same keys and try to activate my last two computers. Will MS "see" my first two computers still connected to the internet with the same keys and say no-no to the last two computers? That's what I'm worried about. Having two of the PC's with the same keys on at the same time and getting spanked by MS. Or, how does it work?

Just use Win7 Ultimate on 2 computers and Pro on the other two. Problem solved!
 
+1 to BlueWeasel.

If you physically bought 1 copy of Windows 7 Ultimate, you get one key. You can't expect to be able to install that copy onto multiple machines at the same time. Technet keys are no different. They just bypass the physical media (getting the DVDs is extra charge) and you just download the ISO's. Then you burn your own DVD, or make a bootable USB key.

Do ALL of your PC's really need to have Win7 Ultimate on them?
Just spread out the versions you have - 2x Ultimate, 2x Professional, 2x Home Premium, 2x Basic (lol, don't bother with this unless you're desperate), then the various "N" versions.

Also, I believe all accounts also come with a single Enterprise edition key, which is a VLK - Volume License. You get only one key, but it can be activated 100 times (I think simultaneously?)
*Someone correct me if I'm wrong; I don't know if this VLK only comes with the Professional account or not.

What makes Technet so much more attractive is that you're not limited to just Win7. You get Vista, XP, 2k, etc, as well as first crack at new stuff, such as Win8 RTM. You ALSO get 2 keys for each Microsoft Office product, and many other software. Again, not *technically* for production/home use, but that hasn't stopped anyone.

Guys it's not crapping on a hot deal, it's letting you know it's a violation of the terms and why the TechNet's are getting more and more restrictive.

Use them to test and then BUY the proper licensing.
 
anyone find any deals for the pro version.. mine expired and i let the subscription lapse long enough that they won't let me use the renewal.. 🙁
 
Anyone know if you can purchase the standard version and later upgrade to the Pro version? Should I just get the pro version to be safe?

I'm currently in Application Support, and would like a VMWare home lab to use for SANS certifications. I know at some point you need a production environment, so I should just get the Technet pro version so I can test away from work?
