Please correct me if I am wrong. I take it that you need to have a laptop in the car with you in order to use this.

Where do you put the laptop if someone is sitting on the passenger seat?

Where do you leave the laptop when you want to park and leave the car? I'd rather not take a laptop out of the car and put it in the trunk in public when I am parking the car somewhere. That is just asking for trouble.

1. Yes you need your laptop or a carputer.

2. If someone is riding along with me, they love to watch the GPS screen for me on the laptop and help with navigation. I'm sure they could just shut the lid and put it aside though, too.

3. When I park somewhere, I just shut my laptop bag over my laptop and pull the GPS receiver off of my rear-view mirror (I just "drape" the cord over the mirror for easy up and easy down of the receiver, it still gets great reception).

I got it in the morning and have played with it a little. Hardware seems to be pretty good, but I am not comfortable with the software yet.

For the use in the car here is my logic:
I plan to use it mostly in the minivan, so there is always a place where I can put my laptop. While driving I can place my laptop on the middle console.
The advantage of PDA is that you can place it on the front dashboard so you can look at it while driving. With laptop you mosly have to just listen. But laptop has much higher resolution (1680 on my) then PDA. Laptop is probably going to be great for longer trips...

just make sure you secure that laptop in place in some fashion

I've used the 2005 version of S&T very successfully for several long trips with our travel trailer. My biggest complaint was that it didn't have voice. Now it does and I can get the new version without the GPS (since I already have that) for $25 after rebate. I too paid $129 for the 2005 version about 5 months ago. 🙁 BTW, not sure what chipset the GPS receiver uses but I haven't had a problem with it yet and I've driven in and around 4 states with it. MS may not have the polish and features of some other, more expensive programs but it performs it's function just fine for probably 98% of us. This is a heck of a deal.

Old deal I know, but is there a good, inexpensive USB2 GPS Receiver that will work with S&T 2006 GPS software that I can use for 2nd car?

TIA
