That's a pretty good price. I bought MS S&T 2005 w/ GPS for $125+ back a few months ago (well almost a year ago). This is pretty cool to go along with it if you have a laptop with bluetooth.

IMO, $99 for the bluetooth dock is too steep when a bluetooth GPS receiver can be had for less than that.

Aside than that, $80 for USB GPS & ST2006 is HOT!

It comes with everything you need. The extra bluetooth cradle is if you want to go wireless.

Hey, I never said the bluetooth dock was a hot deal. ;) But I'm going to get it. Like I said, I'm using the GPS that came with S&T 2005 and quite frankly, the USB cable gets on my nerves. Wireless is so much nicer. :)

if you expect this to be a good gps receiver I doubt it...in addition I will bet the voice guidance software is nowhere up to Garmin or Iguidance

Garmin,FYI has 6 million POIs!!!
Maybe that's why the MS product isn't as expensive. Not everyone wants to spend $200 for this type of functionality. I'd rather pay $80 for a functional and decent product than $200 for a functional and great product any day of the week (when it comes to this anyway).

But the problem is MS product has in the past been a big disappointment for navigation use but most who have it....

I can not comment on MS Street and Trips 2006 for sure but I have not heard it is a big improvement

Also most of the cost is the receiver...I would bet big $$ that the GPS receiver is not very good..no way it could be as a part of an $80 package

the best overall GPS receiver is the Globalstat BT 338..it will many cases mantain a satellite in a building and in downtown area

The Garmin GPS10 is good but not as good as the BT 338 with the SIRF III chipset..but I love the IQue software and it is features..I am going to Chicago and will see how the GPS 10 works

Well put. GPS quality does play a big factor into the end-user experience (didn't really give that any thought myself). The good thing here is that price does exhibit quality. You pay for what you get.

I'll step out of this discussion now, since I do not have the knowledge needed to even be here :).

I just took a look at MS demo of Street&Trips and it looks rather good.
http://www.microsoft.com/streets/default.mspx (choose "Take a look of Streets & Trips" link)

(Night mode is cool, auto zooming before the turn, quick rerouting) To me it seems better thn Accura/Honda GPS which is usually considered to be the best build-in GPS system. I presume stand alone system maybe can be better...?

Can you tell how other GPS systems are better then MS S&T running on a notebook?

Actually.. the receiver is excellent. The MS software is not good for driving GPS navigation.. However, the software is excellent for planning and finding directions beforehand.

I read this review: http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/articles.asp?id=137&page=3 and it seems that MS S&T is very usable (in it's current version) for GPS navigation. Why did you say that it is not good for GPS navigation?

2005 version had no voice nav...not good when driving

where do did you see the GPS receiver is very good with this package..what chipset is it using..

Not trying to get people to leave the discussion..I just want people to be aware that this may not be the product they desire...

Navteq maps overall are the best...Oncourse Nav 5, Iguidance 2.1.2, Garmin GPS10 and several others use these map database...Telatlas is used by TomTom 5 and some say in the USA it is not as good

All GPS software has drawbacks

But I have owned the BT 338, Iguidance, GPS10, Garmin 2610(standalone unit for a car)..I have seen Oncourse Nav 5....

Personally I like the Garmin product best but what I like is not always good for someone else

But the MS product has not been up to snuff for many users

I maybe wrong so show me a review that says it is a good receiver for nav use

People, I use this software every day for work, and it's decent for what it does. It's not the best ever, but for $80, you CANNOT beat the deal. I like the Delorme Street Atlas 2006 software better for in car navigation. It is A LOT better at automatically rerouting you if you take a wrong turn or want to go a different way than what it initally recommends. It also shows your next 2 turns instead of MS S&T that just shows your next turn.

I'd pick this up for $80 to see if you like it, and if you don't, you still got a heck of a deal on a USB gps receiver that you can use with other software.

Please correct me if I am wrong. I take it that you need to have a laptop in the car with you in order to use this.

Where do you put the laptop if someone is sitting on the passenger seat?

Where do you leave the laptop when you want to park and leave the car? I'd rather not take a laptop out of the car and put it in the trunk in public when I am parking the car somewhere. That is just asking for trouble.

I guess it's just a personal preference. I know with Streets and Trips, it's a pain in the royal arse to recalculate routes, see how much time you've lost or made up, etc. Streets and Trips still doesn't have 2 year old interstate sections in the map data. Night map is cool, but you still have a lot of "bright" spots on the screen, which kind of defeats the purpose of having the night map mode.

This software will satisfy 90% of the people that use it. But between the 2, I try Delorme first. This deal is still smoking regardless!
