Actually, according to their web page, they will stop doing security patches for NT 4.0 comes Jan 1st 2005. Wouldn't this be a "dare" to hackers who withheld their vicious virus until next year and unleash it to the public?

We still have 200+ servers running NT 4.0 just in our department. :|

When enough people b1tch and moan about it, they might take it back. It happened when they said they were pulling Win98 support, right? NT4 seems like an important enough product but it's outdated to say the least - I can see why they'd be pulling support.

2k3 is ideal, but the business will not spend the cash to upgrade the server fast enough to run 2k3, some of our servers running nt 4.0 are Compaq Proliant 1500s. look up the specs for that box and you'll crap your pants. :D

Move to linux if the company is too cheap to spend the cash on new hardware/software. How old is NT now? It's gotta be at least 6 or 7 years old by now, probably more.

We do have 2k3 and Active directory. We're very very very slow in doing "Server remediation".

I think I should get a newer laptop first.... hmmmm...

i believe they have already moved this back because of complaints from people.

i think it's time for you to write that 'massive upgrade' proposal :)

It was introduced in 1996, so at its "retirement" date, it will be just shy of 9 years old.

The admin & maintenance cost on 200+ dog-slow NT4 servers has to be pretty high compared to the 20 speedy Win2000 servers that could replace them.

Installing NT4 was unpleasant when I was doing it in '96, it must be hell now with another 8 years of service packs, hotfixes and security updates.

:disgust: Don't remind me...I'll admit I have never worked in the server room, but like countless others, I have set up many NT boxes at home or at work and I hated every second of it after having setup windows 2000 server etc.

Our site has a major project planned that is going on right now to move everything to 2000 or 2003. Your work place should have a similar project going on because if you wait until 2005 MS is going to rake you over the coals.

AFAIK, If you are utilizing an Active Directory Domain then there is no way you are using NT servers also. Unless you are running 2 domains, one for your old servers and one for your new servers. Although, I may be wrong on this, not sure.

Yeah, we do have the old domains (2-3) and the new active directory at the same time. which means I also have 2 seperate domain admin accounts.

I know how you feel. We have been running NT 4.0 servers for a long time time now. Is wasn't until this Spring that we got the ok to start upgrading.

This is where we were:

Gateway ALR-7200
NT 4.0 Server
Penitum 200 MHz
384MB RAM
SCSI-2 Hard Drives
Exchange Server 5.5

Gateway NS-7000
NT 4.0 Server
Pentium 300 MHz
Can't remember the RAM size
SCSI-2 Hard Drives
SQL Server 7.0

We are migrating over to:

(2) Two PowerEdge 2650 Servers, each run
Dual Xeon 2.8 GHz
2.0 GB DDR266 RAM
One has 73 GB Ultra320 SCSI RAID 1
One has 147 GB Ultra320 SCSI RAID 1
Exchange Server 2003
SQL Server 2000
Windows Server 2003
