Microsoft halves Surface RT production orders, say sources

Ballmer was right after all, might only 'sell a few million'

Microsoft has slashed the number of Surface RT tablets on order with original design manufacturers (ODMs) in Asia, according to reports.

The supply chain was primed to build and ship four million units of the ARM-based devices by year-end, but Redmond has slashed this to two million on the back of weak demand, sources told Digitimes.




Next up. Microsoft releases Windows Classic. All the goodness of Windows 7 with a Windows 8 logo and Start Menu.

After the Windows Phone 7 bullshit that happened, I vowed to never touch one of their mobile shits ever again. I actually like Windows 8...but I don't want to buy one of their tablets just so they can announce Windows 9 for Tablets next year and I have to buy a new thingamajig

win8 is being rolled out everywhere...we're still waiting for our win7 upgrade which will come "soon"

So I take it you don't buy any tech anymore? The other guys are pumping out updates faster than MS has been.
 
Honestly, the Surface is pretty awesome, but I'm waiting for the Pro. Why would I buy the RT when there isn't app compatibility? Plus, in using the RT, I noticed some lag using the office apps and lync video chat. IMHO, the Pro should have been available on day 1.

Making PC OS into tablet/phone OS like is a final straw IMO. They have really done it to themselves.
 
Might get a Pro. The iPad and Android tablets really turn me off since I have to rely on apps being released to the market. I'd so much rather have an actual x86 OS so I can install the same programs on my tablet as my PC.

it is truly a shame to see how bad Microsoft's thought process was with the Surface, I mean they debuted it with only the functionality for Windows 8 RT when if someone is going to buy something that mimics a laptop with a full featured keyboard and such they should of realized consumers would want to use it like a full featured notebook replacement, IBM definitely beat them to the punch on this one... with their new ideapads....

Doesn't make sense.

Your tablet will never perform as well as even a low end laptop.

MS OS has very few apps (even though it will grow, I don't see it catching up to Apple/Android in the near future.

Also the things that tablets CAN do, you are already able to do with apps out there.

There's only 1 app that it needs: microsoft office
 
I want to see what happens with the Pro.

I never saw much attraction in the RT. Where I think there may be a market niche is a tablet that is not a toy -- that is, has a real processor and can run x86 apps. Once the price of the Pro comes down, I think it could do fairly well.

it's a decent comprise between form factor, flexibility and function.

but at $900, I don't see it being very popular

I don't own a tablet, I have a Windows Phone 7..which I regret, it is still in its infancy and needs a lot of work. The apps aren't as good as other platforms and Microsoft already made the decision to just make something else. What does this mean for me? I still get to have a phone...but if I want any of the new functionality..I have to buy a new Windows Phone 8 to get it. I just got this phone last year, its practically brand new..and now its a brick..unless all I care about is calling people.

Atleast with Android, if you weren't compatible with a new OS update..it was because you had one of those cheapo Android phones. Not with Microsoft, spend $300 on a phone..use it for a year...time to buy a new one for continued support.

See, that's the problem - marketing. This isn't Apple-like pricing. The Surface Pro is an ultrabook in a tablet form factor. It's a full PC. Apple has no equivalent product, it would be like an iPad with the guts of a Mac Mini. $899 is lower than I expected - I figured over $1000.

I hate apple, but let's face it, no company can pull of the BS apples pulls. And it's sad to see companies try (especially one like MS).

Since I can get a laptop that's 2x the specs at half the price...I will take the compromise of the size/weight over tablet ANY day of the week and twice on sunday.

Someone should send MS a memo. Tablet hype is dying. THere is 0 innovation at this point.

Also people are finding out that these devices are simply "nice to haves" for travel or toilet material. Outside of that, the entire "its cool to have a tablet" thing and fad is not worth the premium price these companies are asking.

It's a dying trend ....mark my words.

Yeah, the Surface commercials (well, commercial; I've only seen the one) have sucked. The Intel Ultrabook commercials would have been better as Surface commercials.

I don't know about dying, but I think they'll lose their luster. People are figuring out their nice as an /additional/ machine, and those sales will continue, but it'll just be a routine purchase; nothing special.

I agree with the whole tablet realm is on a track to be nothing more then a trend but again, as stated above... check out the IBM Ideapads, its literally a two-in-one device.... the best of both worlds wrapped into one. That is where the money is better spent! a full featured product that acts as both a notebook and tablet when desired.
Edit: I ment this post to also piggy back on what Vdubchaos stated as well..

Sure it has an i5, but what is the use case here? Why would you even want to run x86 programs on a tiny tablet?

I fail to see how the extra $400 for the Pro version is worth it.
