Microsoft Security Essentials - complaint

Excessive, prolonged hard drive activity.

In an effort to stop it I've turned off the daily scan. Still happens. The hard drive will seek for minutes on end and I'm tired of listening to it. I've googled the issue and have found maybe one other similar complaint.

I'm ready to uninstall it just to stop hearing my hard drive "thrash" for minutes on end everyday.

it doesn't do this either I have it installed in my desktop win7 pro x64 and on my sister's laptop win 7x64 pro both with daily scans disabled and it never does this. try reinstalling it.

If it is the problem, not saying it is, why don't you try and set the scan to weekly instead and so a quick instead of a full scan. Set it to a time when you are away.

Verify that it is the application first. Uninstall and use safe browsing practices to see if this still occurs. There is a possibility it isn't MSE at all. I installed this on my HTPC without issues (XP MCE 2005) so then I installed it on my wife's computer (Vista Business 32). Neither PC have experienced anything like this.

ok, it does it's "thing" at 10:30 am, it's still going now

I have scheduled scans off and have turned off the "system restore point" option

Did you turn your computer on in the morning? Defrag is set to run at 1AM, and if your computer is usually off at that time, it could be what's causing the disk activity in the morning. You could also start logging the disk activity if it isn't already doing that.

There is no licensing or expiration concerns for MSE, why not remove it to quickly isolate your problem? I think your problem sounds more like indexing service, defraggin, or other software running in the background.

Task Manager => Resource Monitor. Done.

System

C: \System Volume Information

and

svchost.exe(LocalSystemNetworkREstricted)

both are going insane, I know it's MSE, looks like it's scanning everything on my C drive
