you should update. 8 is a pain, 8.1 is much more like what i wanted to start with and i wouldnt go back to 7 or 8 ever. we rolled out 8.1 u1 at work and people are very happy with it, im getting zero complaining about it. its what the release of 8 should have been
 
One thing that I believe they must fix in 9 is the DPI scaling issues, they haven't quite worked out all those problems yet. Also am really hoping that they actually put multiple desktops in there!

Linux will never ever be a desktop replacement for Windows. This has been argued to death already.

It does not need to be like Win7,I wish people would get over Win7,all they need to do is keep improving Windows from 9 onwards,how do you think Win3.11 or Win95 started.

I don't think you see a pure desktop OS again,Microsoft seem to be keeping the hybrid design maybe with new improved GUI etc ,they could learn more from Linux then Win7 IMHO.
Personally that's is what I'm hoping for GUI wise ie something not seen before but improved, but hey you know some users will want the old model back,you can't win them all.


I do know one thing,users have it way too easy nowadays with modern Windows IMHO.

It means you can have very easy operating systems nowadays yet some users will always moan about something,old days it was a lot harder and you actually had to use your brain.


Want to bet on the first moan about Win9 or 10,some things don't change over the years ie some users.


Getting back on topic I think the desktop OS is going to have to change and evolve again and again if Microsoft want all in one OS which is what they seem to be putting the future on.

Linux should also have an interesting future,they always seem to come up with the best desktop operating systems IMHO.

This has been a non issue for us "Start8" users from Stardock. $4.99 & boom u have a customizeable & pretty start menu. Problem solved, months ago. Who needs win9?

Those that hate Win8/8.1 are waiting for Win9,personally looking forward to Win9(new OS to play with).

Win8.1 is solid OS but not everybody likes it,end of the day some people wait for the next OS and hope its right for them.

Win10 should even be more interesting on what Microsoft do with that.

Yea but its a shame. With "Start8" app it pretty much looks the same as win7 but is a much more efficient OS. anyways to each their own. I only used win 8.1, never tried win 8, and its awesome for me.🙂

Ultimately its MS' fault...if start8 is the number 1 selling app for win 8, they should have definitely learned from that. How hard was it to create start8? Prolly took a week to make it. I just dont understand why MS didnt do it themselves, maybe its too big a company and moves at a snails pace.🙁

They are the best they've ever been, however, in 8.1. They've finally got to the point where if an app is too dumb to resize itself Windows goes and smashes it to the right size (albeit blurry) instead of just ruining everything by making the fonts too big, and you can override it if you like, which is fantastic.

They really should've been this way when Vista came out, but... well, not a lot we can do about that.
 
It will be interesting (well, for some of us) to see what MS keeps from Win8 and whether they move away from the whole tile/metro thing. It's obvious that out of the box, Win8 is a OS designed for touch, and that the desktop adaptation was a flop. I just hope they get it right.
 
Win 8 is an awesome OS that is better than Win 7 in every way EXCEPT when in mouse and keyboard mode. The lousiness of the mouse and keyboard mode may be a matter of personal opinion, but given the poor adaption rate of Win 8 and the popularity of Start 8, it’s the majority opinion.

If they take Win 8, give it a good start menu, throw in windowed metro apps for good measure, then I think they will have a major winner.

However, this is Microsoft. They are going to screw it up. My prediction for how MS screws up Win9 is:

1. The start menu sucks. They design it to be flat and every app gets installed in it, or something along those lines.
2. Subscription based model. That will kill it for me in an instant.

I’m not sure how else they could ruin it, but I expect there are many more ways. They ability of MS to screw something up is surpassed only by the government’s ability to screw something up.
