Microsoft related Conspiracies that you've heard?

We all heard them. What are the best and/or stupidest one's you've heard?

My gf's uncle believes that Microsoft bought out a company that successfully won a patent lawsuit against them, and bill gates paid the settlement directly to himself. I asked him several times to prove it but he get all pissed off and offended that I dare question the evil of 'M$' He also lives his life through apple products.

My grandmother(who used to work for IBM in the 50's)believes that Bill gates stole Windows from IBM.

And probably the stupidest one I heard was from my old math teacher. That Microsoft allows the Anti-Virus companies make viruses for windows in exchange for a cut of revenue as "Licensing Terms."

Your grandmother isn't exactly wrong you know. Now of course if you tried to correct her misunderstandings and she still says that MS flat out stole (DOS), then whatever. But Microsoft did make a fortune on IBM's lack of foresight. IBM paid MS to "write" qdos, and then let Microsoft keep the rights :O

biggest conspiracy theory i've heard was they were going to sucker most of america to invest in them, then chase off all their best engineers to google to write a mobile os.

So did Mark Zuckerberg, that's how the world works...

There were some amazing ones that I read on 1up's forums. They were written by I think 13 year old Nintendo fanboys (or at least I hope so), but it was crazy stuff (I'm pretty sure at least one of them was that website linked above, although they actually embellished it further). It was in the Wii subforum, like 4-5 years ago so you probably can't even find it now.

Other than that, haven't really heard many.

Your Grandma isn't far off, as Microsoft did rip-off quite a bit of Windows ideas from others (I believe Apple is generally accepted as the person they really stole the original Windows GUI concept from, of course Apple basically did that to Xerox, so).

Your GF's uncle is just a typical anti-____ idiot (be happy he just gets pissed off like that instead of trying to say how, well obviously they just covered everything up and whatever). There might be truth to it (wouldn't be surprised if they've bought companies that have won patent lawsuits against them), but the rest is just stupid.

Well, the thing is, Microsoft did try to secure Windows, which basically blocked out anti-virus programs (or rather made it so they'd have to do a lot of work to be able to run), so they were (or might have actually) going to sue Microsoft over it, so Microsoft relinquished that to let them keep on. This was with Vista. That's really not that much different, but Microsoft probably would have had the Department of Justice all over them again if they hadn't. They do offer some good free anti-malware programs.

Actually, I've had someone tell me that you can't trust Microsoft's antivirus. Why? Just because. You can't, duh, it should be obvious.

they acknowledge and permit piracy in order to keep their monopoly long-term and keep consumers away from the competitors linux and osx

This is one of the funniest ones I've heard. Who knows? It could be true. 😛

1) Go into word for windows.

2) Type 'Unable to get a date' and highlight this text.

3) Go to 'Tools, Language, Set Language' and change to 'English (United States)'.

4) Make sure your text is still highlighted.

5) Go to 'Tools, Language, Thesaurus'.

God where is this from? I remember this from years ago but what did it do?

I don't believe that one bit. Why would the DOJ, FTC, or any other branch get pissed off that Microsoft did something to secure it's own Operating system?

Because of that little lawsuit they brought against them before. The European Union is still all over them, and the DoJ I'm sure is almost constantly investigating them. They likely wouldn't act unless provoked to, but since the antivirus companies were doing that, its not like it would take much. Doesn't mean the DoJ wouldn't rule in favor of Microsoft, but think what would happen if the AV companies got an injunction preventing the sale of Windows while it got sorted out.

That's what happened when Microsoft released an optional security program on Windows Update. Imagine what would have happened if they had embedded that into Windows, which is what they were looking to do starting with Vista. That's exactly the same thing that happened with IE as well, so there would be clear connections made between the two cases.

I remember idiots claiming that Windows (whatever version) had a secret backdoor code so MS (or big gov) could get into your PC and know everything about you.

I also remember some sort CD thing involving a microwave.

Your grandmother is telling a half truth- MS and IBM were going to make an OS together, then parted ways. IBM used what they had to make OS/2, and Microsoft used what they had to make Windows NT. Without IBM's development, Windows NT, 95, and higher wouldn't have been what they are today.

The other stuff is just crap that someone made up to explain things they don't know about.
