Recall that when Microsoft started talking of the XBox, there were many, many people saying that they would get eaten alive and that the XBox would be a huge flop; evidently this hasn't happened.
I thought it might flop but I eat my words as I play my Xbox constantly. Microsoft 4EVA.

Nintendo is not going to put out another console, except for maybe a handheld one. Sales of the Gamecube are plummetting worldwide, and Nintendo will be lucky just to ride out the failure of the Gamecube.
Uhh... the GC has been very successful for Nintendo. MS is the one taking the beating, selling the XBox for less than production cost. And GC sales have actually been increasing of late, not declining.

All 3 companies sell the hardware at a loss, that's the business model. Also, Microsoft projected a a large loss on the XBox even before it was launched. The XBox was only to get their foot in the door, they will likely attempt to turn a profit with XBox2, now that they have a customer base in the gamer market. Recall that when Microsoft started talking of the XBox, there were many, many people saying that they would get eaten alive and that the XBox would be a huge flop; evidently this hasn't happened.

Sony now makes a small profit on the PS2.

Regarding stabbing someone in the back - business is cutthroat. You don't go into business to make friends - you go in to make a profit.

Skoorb - I still remember to this day you being a huge PS2 fanboy. I recall great flamewars involving you and me (and many others) :)

I wonder if this will break backwards compatibility with Xbox1 games? If developers are doing any low-level graphics coding their hardware assumptions might not transfer to an ATI GPU, just like the days of "Direct3D" games that really only ran on 3dfx chips.

ohh, that would suck :(

I play games on my pcs with Gforce and ATI and the games still play the same, albeit there are differences in frame rates and aa.

the biggest reason xbox 2 might not be backward compatible is that MS doesn't own the rights to all the chips inside. sony owns the rights to all of their chips, and because of shrinking transistors was able to cram the whole PSX into one chip and put it in PS2. MS would have to get a new contract with intel and nvidia and get them to combine the chips, which likely would be impossible. of course they could go with a multi-chip solution , but i doubt either intel or nvidia would want part of that if the thing was powered by amd or ati.

as for hardware at a loss, sony makes a little bit on each PS2 because the chips got cheaper, and nintendo was making a profit at $200 and might still be at $150 since their chips underwent a shrink last year.

Well, as for Xbox vs. GC...they are pretty neck and neck right now. But both have a huge title coming. Halo 2 for the Xbox (I have a feeling that alone will sell a boatload of systems, and then Zelda for GC. Thats when Nintendo's future will probably be decided. Xbox could fail right now and MS would have another go at it cause they have the moola.

I do think Nintendo would be crapping in their pants if Metroid Prime never existed though.

I'll take just a smidgen of credit for Skoorb's "conversion," at least for the killing blow... :D

Maybe not VERY successful...but not a flop either.
And it's impossible to overestimate the strength of the GBA, which stands alone in the handheld market. The strength of this product line has basically kept anyone else from even THINKING about a handheld gaming unit.

I used to be in the Retail gaming industry and the thing that kept Nintendo alive for so many years is the Gameboy/GB Color/GB Advance. With no real competition in the mobile games market.......... they would really sell units not only during Christmas but big sales during spring break, summer vacation & back to school (as I remember since my 5 years in the industry I must have sold over 1500+ units myself, gotta love the ESA's :D).

Funny thing is I never really own a console since the Atari 2600 and I rarely played many computer games (yet I was in the retail gaming industry) :D (I had to pay for college somehow)

Cheers,

Actually I think Dolphin was the code name for the system before gamecube was thought of.
