Vista is way better at this than XP. Vista at least lets you set the time for the next pop up. 4 hours max isn't bad at all. XP is way worse. It just pops up constantly every 15 minutes no matter what.

i have it set to manual installs so it'll download the update, but i get to choose when to install/restart.

This bothers me a LOT more in XP than it does in vista. In vista, I just select 4 hours, and reboot when I'm ready. XP the stupid thing keeps popping up every 5 minutes.

It doesn't even get that far with me. I have mine set to notify me of updates. I then review the updates, pick which ones I want, download, then install them. It's quite easy...

That only gives you a few minutes.

You should be able to do automatic updates without needing this crap - when you're playing a game or watching a movie it's reaaally annoying, and they should have a link to options right in that screen to turn it off, instead of needing to do that whole gpedit thing.

It's the reason I don't bother with updates. I have a router, firewall, and have protection at the port level. 0 issues since 2000 (when we got our first computer).

Rebooting for updates suck. When you put it all together, that's a lot of rebooting. Random software updates, windows updates, firewall updates, antivirus updates... I disable all that stuff, except for AV updates. Avira has been good though. AVG was brutal, you had to reboot after every single update. Not sure if it's still like that.

But the worse thing with windows update is they can sneak anything they want in your PC, that's the main reason I don't have mine on. Call me paranoid, but I don't like the idea of some big corporation having the ability to install anything on my PC without me knowing. Look when they pulled off the WGA crap. millions of machines were then "infected" with this and put offline.

This thread reminded me to install some updates for Vista (SOs computer). There were 5 important updates available from earlier in the month, so I installed them. Comp rebooted, finished installing the updates, and rebooted again. Then it said updates failed, began reverting, then rebooted again. 25 minutes later and I am back to square one. I guess I'll install them all individually now. *sigh*

EDIT > WTF? It appears the updates were installed after all. 😕

So, it's your fault for not being able to "watch it" and click a couple times? Last time I recalled, it never escaped my attention and I could always delay the reboot. Sounds like it's your issue, not Microsoft's.

Mine never has. I have had it give me the window to extend the time and have let it sit there for a couple of days once, never did anything on its own.

I have Vista and kept getting that message. I just completely disabled automatic updating and finish installing whatever it downloaded beforehand. I just did this recently from a format.

I was fine with automatically restarting until it auto-restarted while I was in the middle of a game without warning. I was just playing, and then the computer shuts off and I assume my power supply has died or something.
