Microsoft Optical Rodents

Has anybody figured out the heck to get these things to work without the cursor jumping around? They have been out for a long time now, and still the only references I can find in the Microsoft KB are few/far between.

When at rest, the cursor moves around a lot. At times it makes it hard to click on a hyperlink. Not really a big issue but it's really annoying and a pain in the arse.

OS is 2000 Pro and the rodent is a Microsoft IntelliEye. All the MS KB can offer is to move the mouse speed to "5 notches from the right" in an effort to slow it down.

Don't work. Zilch .. Nada... Zippo. Only thing that does is make mousing even more painful ... since I have a big monitor and I like the mouse speed cranked up to about 3/4 to the max.

Suggestions hoped for and appreciated.

what kind of mouse pad are you using? I used to have similar problems when using a white mousepad-- switched to a black one and havent had problems since.

Have u installed the latest version of IntelliPoint?

I had a couple of problems a few months ago with my Intellimouse Explorer and since I've installed the progie it all works fine.

But check your mouse pad too, I had to buy one of those colourfull ones so the mouse behaved correctly

I had that problem also, but since I upgraded to Windows XP, that problem has gone away. It's probably the drivers and the software so I'd go with what nagger said and try upgrading those two things. Hope this helps.

The mouse pad I'm using is a solid blue colored one with textture like cloth or felt or something. It's one of those ones you get for 5.99 and has the wrist pad built in.

I have tried the thing on other surfaces though and had the same results. The drivers I am using are NOT the ones on the cd, but rather, I downloaded them when I put this machine together in November. So the drivers can't be that old, can they?
