Microsoft Office XP S&T, $75, + upgrade to 2003 for $13 more! YMMV

Part 1 of the deal:

Microsoft Office XP Standard for Students and Teachers. Includes Microsoft Word 2002, Excel 2002, Microsoft Outlook 2002 and
PowerPoint 2002.

Buy today from amazon.com for $125 - $50 MIR = $75 net AR with free shipping.

Microsoft Office XP S&T

This was on the Friday sale, price may or may not be the same tomorrow. Theoretically, you must have either a student or a teacher in the house to purchase this product, but there is no proof or verification required.

Part 2 of the deal:

Microsoft has recently announced the Technology Guarantee (that includes the Student and Teacher edition) that allows upgrade to Office 2003 for $13.

M$ Technology Guarantee

Caveat: Amazon says it cannot be upgraded. Microsoft says it can. Microsoft is doing the upgrading and there is no exclusion that I see. And this is the M$ "technology guarantee", not an really an "upgrade", so who knows. YMMV.

Not a bad deal for students and teachers, if you can not get a cheaper copy from school

The "technology guarantee" is not the same as an update. What M$ is saying here is that they are coming out with a new version, and they don't want the store shelves clogged with the "old" version while people wait to buy the "new" version. They know they are just going to sell one or the other... so why not clear the shelves of the 2002 version and give them the 2003 version that they would otherwise have waited for.

M$ does this EVERY TIME a new version comes out. I have personally done it in the past.

Is the package different from standard office XP? A friend installed it and said that it only allowed the usage for 20 instances.

Yes, until you activate it. Or that what your friend has could be just a demo.

Thanks. Offer still good at Amazon ($75 after rebate). Got 3, that's the limit for the rebate.

Just a heads up on the MS upgrade. The form says ONE upgrade form per address. It allows you to select multiple products from a list but NOT multiple copies of any product.

Since MS requires a copy of a receipt dated August 15 through November 30th in adition to the proof of purchase (box top or title page), they may be tracking receipt ids to keep people from using a later receipt for multiple or earlier purchases. So I placed 3 orders instead of one order (for 3) to get 3 separately numbered receipts. Two of them are for friends so I hope the upgrades will go through ok.

hmm, seems possibly hot ... i've been wanting to upgrade from office2k for some time ... only problem is, i've currently got a version of 2k that includes front page and access, don't really care about access but i really like front page. i use it all the time for making ebay auctions. anybody hear any rumors about other office 2003 deals that might come out when they release it, esp, anything like the deals when winxp was released? seems it might be smarter to wait for deals like that, if they are coming ... !

You mean like, attend the release party and come home with a NFR copy? :D

Darn. The rebate's no longer available. Also, Amazon did not claim that Microsoft's Technology Guarantee was invalid. It referred to it as being inelligible for the next "Upgrade" (Meaning MS upgrade versions would not recognize it as an elligible product for the upgrade). This is irrelevant because MS is replacing it with the 2003 student & teacher version under the technology guarantee.

Just a reminder for those of you in college, you can usually get student and teacher licenses for free if you go to the local computer lab on campus and tell them you need them. My local community college gives out xp pro and office all the time to students, full cd with valid key.

Thanks for the deal, I got mine last week. Only problem was, it didn't come in a box, it came in this plastic packaging. And on the technology guarantee form, they ask for the complete box top, however on the CD set, there is a UPC which looks like the box top usually found on the top of MS products. Anyways I called them up and they said you could send the owners title page, or in my case just send both just in case. Well I hope I get this! Thanks for the great deal man.

NOT MINE. :( They get them for free for school use, but they do not give them to the students.

BTW, retail S&T is in plastic also...

I just about bought this-I have office 2000. I read the amazon reviews and decided not to buy. I'm a grad student and want it on my laptop and home desktop. You can only install on one.

No, that's not true (Though MS would like you to believe it is). According to the EULA, you can only install on one BUT you can install on both and go through activation on both. Microsoft will only raise a flag if you activate a few more times in the next few months. They'll just assume you didn't like it on the PC it was previously activated on. MS provided plenty of room for error so customers wouldn't be outraged by the limitations imposed by Microsoft Product Activation. After about 6 months, you can safely reinstall again.

BTW, Office2K SP1 introduced Microsoft Product Activation...

Thanks for the correction CZroe. It is too late to do this (no rebate and back to $149). It was $119-50 last week. Thanks for the Office2000 sp1 info also. Like the book "To Serve Man" the aliens carried in the old sci. fi. movie was really a cookbook.

You can't even legally get it, it's for k-12 students and faculty....

50, I'm pretty sure that it says on the box that it is for college students and staff also. Grad students need to be taking 6 credits. I read that a while ago and could be wrong.

Same here :| They let faculty install it but not the students who are paying for the education. OK, my whining it over ;)
