Microsoft Office Startup?

I've been slowly learning how to tweak my system and one of the things I found that I don't understand is the "Microsoft Office" icon in the Startup folder of the start menu.

1) What does it do?

2) Is this useful?

3) Will removing from the startup folder do anything?

Thanks much.

The main thing it does is steal resources on boot up, so that word and excel can start a little faster. In a win2k/xp system it probably isn't a big deal. In win98, it lowers your free resources noticably.
