Microsoft offering a free domain name and web hosting!

This offer has been around for some time. I signed up a couple of months ago when they started the beta. It is a good deal.
Same here...

FYI, you have to use Hotmail for your email, and no POP or IMAP access. I was hoping they would be using the Hotmail Live Beta for it, but no love. 🙁

Other than that, fantastic deal if you just want your own domain and basic webmail...I don't even use the webspace.

Can you write and upload your own ASP pages? Does it have a database you can use? My current host offers apache/php/mysql, but no ASP. I'd just like to play around with it to learn.

Why does it ask for a credit card number during the sign up? Any idea if they are going to charge the card?

I just signed up for it. It asked for a credit card number, but on the confirmation page, it showed the charge as $0, so all is good.

As for the ASP, the basic website they provide for you as a template is using ASP.NET, so I am assuming that I can use ASP.NET on the one that I create. If this is true, Free ASP.NET hosting makes this a fantastic deal!

I'm guessing they are asking for a credit card to make sure people don't get 500 free webpages...

Is it possible to run a forum software on this site?

If it does actually do ASP and .NET (I haven't tested it yet), then anything is possible for the site.

The web site also says " At the end of the beta period, customers will have the option to continue using the service via a free or fee-based subscription (depending on the product selected). An Internet service provider account is required for Internet and
e-mail access and is not included with Microsoft Office Live services. "

Hence the credit card?

Still, thanks OP!

Thats what I was wondering too. I guess they will say either pay for the hosting (at the end of the beta) or bye bye. They are banking that by that time you will have some useful content on your site that you wouldnt want to give up your domain name.

Nonetheless, thanks a lot OP. I signed up for one.

Signed up. URL is temp.[myurl].officelive.com/layout......

Is this going to change eventually to just [myurl] without the .officelive?

EDIT...

Does anyone know how to upload your own files or actually see some code? It looks as if all the designer stuff is the standard MS GUI developer editor. Its nice to have in addition to coding, but I need to see the code first!

This has been discussed before but you can't modify any of the pages you create nor can you transfer the domain. It's pretty useless IMHO.

Seems like, as of now, there is no way to upload a custom created page for the website. However, I browsed through their message boards and there was a Microsoft post claiming that they are "working on improving access to the website" in the next release. What that really means, I don't know, but people had specifically asked for ftp access to the files. Since the subscription is free now and the basic will continue to be free even after the beta program concludes, it may be worth it to sign up for this now and wait till someone finds a way to put up your own custom site without having to go through MS's online editing tools.

Wow, this is incredibly worthless if you cannot even edit the pages. I guess if you want a journal or something...

As other's have mentioned it does give you your own domain for free. Is it possible to carry this domain over and use it for a different site?

For the domain issue...

Q: If I register my domain name through Microsoft Office Live, can I later transfer it somewhere else?

A: Your domain name will be registered with Melbourne IT, our domain name registrar, with you as the registrant (owner). If you cancel the Office Live service, you maintain full control of your domain name through the Web site of Melbourne IT (www.melbourneit.com.au/). However, you cannot transfer your domain name to another registrar for 60 days after signing up with Office Live. Note that once you cancel your Microsoft Office Live subscription, you are responsible for paying the annual registration fee for the domain name.
