microsoft is one of the necessary evils of this world. It has never surprised me that they don;t even use there own products all of the time.........
 
Give them a day or two to work out the kinks. Anytime you move stuff over to a new platform you will have unexpected problems creep up.

Come people! You are hurting the the hosting company I work for! We do all windows hosting 🙂. IIS is rock stable for us though. The only problems have been related to Cold Fusion (and the occassional piss poor ASP coder).
 
Hey ma, look at all the MS Bashers. You punks need to grow up and realize MS makes some good products and not everything goes as well as you planned. Sh1t happens and webservers crash. I hardly have IIS crash on any of the 10 web boxes at my office..dunno what their problem is.

Actually, they still haven't switched. They tried. They marched in a legion of their people with practically unlimited budget, but they found out that W2K is simply incapable of handling the workload. The front-end servers were switched to W2K, so the website runs on Windows, but the actual behind the scenes work (the REAL work) is done with FreeBSD.

Well, that's the difference.
'My 2000 server is rock stable: It only crashes 17 times/hour!' vs 'Hmm, was the last time we rebooted that FreeBSD machine in 1840 or 1850?'
 

My background has been with Windows & Netware, but I now prefer Debain & Apache over Win2k/IIS. The reason is that you don?t need to upgrade/patch linux as often as Windows, because every patch cause havoc on the system especially Oracle. And, don't even start me on the piss poor trash that they call Exchange Server. The only thing that MS has done well with is Office & IE.

I can't speak about IIS/Apache, but I can speak about office since I'm always writing something academic and heavily footnoted. Word is a huge PITA for me; its implementation of footnotes really feels half-assed. Its auto-correction is problematic at best.

That's pretty naive if you guys think the site is down due to an issue with Windows/IIS.

Indeed, and that's probably the end of it. Regardless of the issue involved, it shouldn't have happened for such a simple site. We transfer sites over to our Windows or Linux boxes all the time w/o issue.
