Microsoft Longhorn is the new Operating system. What is so special about it? Why there is so much hype? Please reply. Any comments are welcome.

There may be hype, but there is no Windows whatever-they-are-gonna-call-the-thing-currently-codenamed-Longhorn, so it is not the "new" OS, its a forthcoming attraction a year away perhaps.

Its "hyped" because it was supposed to have many new and improved things like a new file system and an interface that actually uses the gpu. But alas most of the cool features have been cut. I wonder what is taking them so damn long since most of the features are gone?

[shameless plug] In the Video forum, there's currently a thread about a "feature" that you aren't going to look forward to in whatever Longhorn becomes.

They're spending so much time making the Digital Rights Manglement stuff "bulletproof" that they don't have any time left over to finish the features that would actually make Longhorn a compelling upgrade. Needless to say, I think I'll be upgrading from XP Pro x64 to Linux... ;)

XP to Longhorn is supposed to be a jump in stability and general usage ability similar to going from Windows 98 to Windows XP.

I guess we'll have to wait and see... No one knows right now, and though I don't work for MS and don't have any alphas, I wouldn't make any judgements on performance based on software of that quality, anyway.

Dear Sumuk,

I am not luddite and also not impatient. I am still ready to wait long for Longhorn. I have tried almost all operating systems of Windows series. My interest in Longhorn is building up day by day and the reason is..! From beginning Microsoft is very successful to project Longhorn as something mysterious. Many interesting stories are connected with it, which helped Longhorn to gain pre-launch popularity; I would rather say curiosity about this product. I don't know who is the propaganda minister of Microsoft? May be Mr. Gobels. Relax guys I was just kidding.

Did you Know that Windows XP was code-named Whistler and the next version of Windows was code-named Blackcomb. The names come from ski areas in British Columbia from the vicinity of Microsoft's headquarter at the foot of Whistler Mountain, while 'Longhorn'. is scheduled to be the next release from Microsoft, gets its name from a popular saloon called the 'Longhorn Saloon & Grill' situated near this ski area. I hope after relaxing at 'Whistler' you may find the 'Lonhorn' as the better spot to relax for a longer.

The above information I found on one website, which I found very interesting. I hope you will also get more information on this website. If you want to know more about Longhorn Click Here.

OptyMyStix

If you're a beta tester you'll get notified when releases come out and given information about where to get them, etc. MSDN subscribers can also download builds off the MSDN site.
Can I upgrade from build 5048 to build 5203?
I seriously doubt they gave the installer the capability to upgrade from a pre-alpha release to 5203. You'll almost certainly have to do a clean install.

The real "features" of Longhorn havent gone anywhere. The only real core piece of technology that's been pushed back is WinFS (which will beta around the time LH is released, so it's not that far behind). Searches will still be very fast and far more powerfull than they are today.

I'm surprised nobody has posted this link:

Welcome sumuk and OptyMyStix...

Alot of the new stuff in Longhorn will probably come under the hood.. performance and capability enhancements to the kernel.. increased security features.. updated and better performing TCP/IP stack.. other enhanced networking features..

One thing I saw a few days back was the way longhorn will handle hardware changes such as a mobo swap. It will actually run a quick hardware detection wizard like that of when the OS is initially installing, everytime the system starts. So it should reduce or eliminate those pesky blue screens when a big change in system hardware is made. That is a nice feature for tweakers/sysadmins in itself.

Most of the work on NT/2K/XP thus far have just been in establishing a good base.. NT the first major test of the kernel.. 2K the first implementation of a good server (AD/DNS/IIS5). And XP just made a few tweaks on 2K, updating the GUI, adding a few features for Home users, and generally making the OS slighly more user friendly. Now MSFT can concentrate on other things.

From the research I've been doing, there's a LOT of improvements in many areas. Trouble with MS is that they are taking on an IBM attitude with marketing-- If they decided to sell Sushi, they're apt to put a cardboard sign in the window saying "For sale: Cold raw dead fish meat".

Not that I'm faulting their marketing skills or anything...
