Has anyone read the stuff going on in the homepage news articles? For crying out loud, there's some rancor bubbling out there.

On a side note, what can you actually do with Linux? I use my computer to listen to music, browse the 'net, do homework in Word, Excel, paint, and the occasional program (engineering student), and play games. How much of that is possible in Linux, and how much is possible without writing your own code or something? (I have enough problems with software as it is...)
 
OS is just an OS, you can do pretty much anything you want in linux, including running many windows games using winex and windows programs using wine. That's about the extent of my knowledge about it though, so try the Operating Systems forum.
 
You can do it all in Linux, and aside from the games, all those apps come pre-installed most of the time with the OS itself.
They are just different names, different apps that do the same thing.

There are some distros out tehre even for n00bs, try getting Xandros if you want to see Linux and see just how easy it can be to use.

That distro is just 1 though, there ARE much more complex ones out there. but I enjoyed setting up Xandros just because it was SO freaking easy, very cool how far they have come with Linux!
 
Yes. I use dual boot of Windows and Fedora Core 3. The only reason I'm keeping Windows now is because there is no Steam client for Linux and I don't feel like using wine because Steam is bad enough as it is. But the Linux distros I've used, only 2 (Mandrakelinux 10.1 and FC 3) both came with The GIMP which is like a free version of Adobe Photoshop and come with OpenOffice which is like free Word, Excel, etc. It all works seamlessly and FC 3 was a painless, very easy, install.

EDIT: Oh yeah, FC 3 came with FireFox pre installed and Mandrakelinux 10.1 came with Mozilla. But you can always dl different browsers etc, I'm posting this from FC 3 now on FF. And yes I'm a Linux newb.

EDIT2: FC 3 also came with GAIM.
 
If you want the Windows GUI and the Windows applications, stick to Windows. Many people can't deal with the fact that OpenOffice's spreadsheet program, KOffice's (?) spreadsheet program or the gnumeric spreadsheet program won't do what Excel does. If you're one of those people, then you're not going to like Linux.

I primarily use Windows because I need the ipod, Rio, Windows media and Quicktime video support, but I keep a Linux machine and keep several Linux LiveCDs around because I find Linux to be convenient for things like SSH servers and complex text processing. I have an older version of CrossoverOffice and CrossoverPlugin to let me use Microsoft Office and play Windows media and quicktime video, but it's buggy.
 
you're gonna want wine or crossover office for linux. For things like word and basic excel you can pretty much do anything you like with linux, but if you're using excel extensively, really, there's nothing that equals it in terms of spreadsheets.
 
the only thing you can't do easier in linux is play games (run windows games). people that only do console games and don't do pc games should switch
