If I were to buy a copy of Windows 2003 server with a "5 client license" what does that mean exactly? Does it mean I can load that server software on 5 different machines or I can only have 5 connections to the one server or what?

When you install the OS you are asked if you want to use Cleint ( Per connection ) or seat ( Per computer ) licensing.
If you do Client and you can have upto 5 workstations connected at one time.
