Thanks

MS's vm was voted best by Java One Attendees

When was that, 1998?

MS' JVM sucks, IIRC it doesn't support anything past JDK 1.1

<<MS' JVM sucks, IIRC it doesn't support anything past JDK 1.1 >>

Exactly how does it suck? I've never run into a site that had problems using JVM. On the other hand, Sun's Java puts a stupid icon in your system tray and you have to grant a session everytime you visit a new site or need to print something from java (i.e. USPS). I hate Sun's Java for those reasons alone. 🙂

Oh yeah, to the reason why Microsoft hasn't updated JVM (although i've seen no uses for any updates so far)

"The JVM has not won a permanent spot in Windows. From January 2004 Microsoft won't be allowed to change any of the code in its JVM, because of an agreement with Sun, Cullinan said. "Therefore we will no longer offer Java in Windows from January of 2004," he said."

Sun sued Microsoft, So Microsoft yanked support of Java from Windows. Now Microsoft and Sun have come to an "agreement" (mostly because it hurt Sun pretty bad to not include JVM in Windows. So now they are including it in SP1.

It sucks because it doesn't support JDK 1.2-1.4. You hate it because of a systram icon? Give me a fscking break.

No, do you lack the ability to read? I hate it cause i have to grant it's session everytime i go to a new website or want to print anything from USPS or any other site. Damn nice way to take something i said out of context and manipulate it. Ugh

Sun is stupid either way. Sun sued Microsoft because Microsoft yanked JVM from Windows XP because Sun said they were going to Sue in the first place because it was a variation of Java, not one that can be used across the board. Microsoft virtual machine has a long history of outperforming other virtual machines and offers the best real world compatibility of any virtual machine. Sun didn't like this and sued. So Microsoft Yanks it from WindowsXP!!!! Now Sun and Microsoft have come to an agreement to incluide it in SP1 because Sun was hurt by them yanking it, but didn't Sun sue originally cause they didn't want JVM? Jesus Sun, make up your mind.

As it stands, JVM will be in windows till 2004? Or i know they had a 7 year agreement to phase JAVA out of Windows. Either way it's gone and doesn't have a future.

I just find it funny they sue to stop product, then sue because they said it's not fair that MS stoped product..LOL. Think guys think.

An Interesting find from ZDTV

""In fact, Harrah said last week that Sun was independently negotiating to get the newer version of the JVM on Windows XP PCs when they ship in September. The company also is developing a JVM capable of running in Internet Explorer 6. While Windows XP can run JVM 1.3.1, the Web browser cannot.""

Sun is now developing a JVM that is capable of running on IE6 and negoticating to get Windows to put it in with newer XP PC's/CD's

No matter what a run (applet, application, JDK1.1 or 1.4) I have NEVER had to grant any session. And FYI using the java plug in you can run any java applet in IE5 and 6.

Also this thread isn't about Sun's and MS' politics, its about their JVMs. MS' is old and outdated, so it sucks. Period.

I'm not denying that it's "old", thats why Sun is creating a new JVM for Microsoft to put in new PC's/CD's. But just cause its a bit old doesn't really mean it sucks. I've used it and had no problems with any sites.

Ok. So you guys have never had to grant permission to sites using Java? Have you ever gone to USPS and tried to print a label? Everytime it ask me to grant a permission. I've tried to look for settings, but there are no "settings" liked the system tray Icon. Maybe you know something i dont?

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm running Windows XP and visited a Web site with a Java applet and Internet Explorer told me I couldn't run it; what is going on?

Windows XP (the version of Windows XP which Microsoft began shipping in the Fall of 2001) shipped with the Microsoft VM (a piece of software that runs Java applets)
as a Web-installable component of the product.
Sun Microsystems brought a lawsuit against Microsoft in March, alleging that Microsoft's distribution of the virtual machine in Windows XP over the Web is unlicensed and constitutes copyright infringement.
We believe that Sun is wrong about that, but rather than argue about it we disabled the installation of the Microsoft VM on Windows XP machines that didn't already have a Microsoft VM.
As discussed in more detail below, we are now making the Microsoft VM available by distributing it as part of the upcoming Windows XP SP1.
Any customer who faced this situation can load Windows XP SP1 by downloading it off Windows Update or ordering a CD through http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/ordercd.asp and they will receive the Microsoft VM as part of the default installation of Windows XP.

I may have seen the certificate warning. I would bet that's something USPS has to fix, and not Sun. Isn't it possible to permanently grant permissions in that dialog box?

As far as the system tray icon, you can disable that annoyance by going into Java Plugin settings in the Windows Control Panel.

I would recommend the Sun Java2 VM 1.4.x for almost all users, with the exception of those with older machines where the load time for the Sun VM is gonna be an annoyance. MacOS X's Java2 VM 1.3.1 has a clever shared-memory implementation with a snappy load time; that feature should be ported to other architectures in the future.
