Microsoft issued a security patch at 1 p.m. ET Thursday to fix a serious bug in Internet Explorer, the company said in a blog post.
Customers who have automatic updates enabled won't need to take any action, but Microsoft encouraged users without that service "to apply this update as quickly as possible."

Microsoft also decided to issue a fix for Windows XP users, even though the company dropped support of that operating system earlier this month.
The patch comes just a few days after security company FireEye revealed the flaw -- which affected Internet Explorer versions 6 through 11-- in a post on last Friday.
Microsoft followed up with its own "security advisory" on Saturday, in which the company warned hackers had already used the flaw to launch "limited, targeted attacks."
As with many attacks, hackers can start with methods like convincing users to click on fake websites, Microsoft explained. From there, the glitch could allow attackers to run malicious software on the user's computer -- and even gain the same level of access to the computer as the real user.
Microsoft's patch on Thursday fixes that problem. In its post, Microsoft reiterated that users should upgrade to Windows 7 or 8.1, and to the latest version of Internet Explorer, IE 11.
“The security of our products is something we take incredibly seriously," Adrienne Hall, the general manager of Microsoft's trustworthy computing division, said in a blog post on Thursday. "When we saw the first reports about this vulnerability we decided to fix it, fix it fast, and fix it for all our customers."
Before that fix came in, even the Department of Homeland Security weighed in with an advisory on Monday, calling on users to run alternative web browsers in the interim.

But Hall said in her post that the "concerns were, frankly, overblown. Unfortunately this is a sign of the times and this is not to say we don’t take these reports seriously."

Maybe MS$ is finally starting to realize that it is not wise to alienate 22M customers that have XP

No, it just happened too close to the end of support date that it was trivial to issue this update. If it is a year from now, I doubt you'll see Microsoft issue this update.

Those 22 million "customers" have had support long enough, it's time for them to move on to another OS. I'm sure Microsoft isn't crying over the $50 they earned from that "customer" 13 years ago.

You can't really deny that those early reports crowing about the security hole in IE and that XP was going to go unpatched because it had just gone EOL, affected Microsoft's reputation online.

I have read alot of people on XP are reporting problems with IE and SYSTEM RESTORE after taking this update..... No surprise..... MICROSOFT HAS AN AGENDA! (To get everyone off of XP)

NO ONE ON XP SHOULD ACCEPT ANY UPDATES FROM THEM!!!!!! (If they wanna keep using XP that is)

I ditto this. And, with as huge a percentage of users and businesses worldwide still running XP, it would have been not just bad business, but near suicidal for them to not write and offer the patch to those who run XP.

I also prefer to think they have SOME character and so, conscience re the collective.

By the way, just like my initial thread addressing the hole, this belongs in "Security" forum.

Corkyg moved mine there.

This....defines terror-based cynicism. I in no way believe there is some insidious agenda in that patch for those still running XP.

It's possible that anyone having those issues was infested/infected before the fact. Or, is missing a previous patch this one needs to work properly in XP. Anyone so impacted should contact MS or post on their forums.
