It's the two button version with scroll wheel optical version. I have it and basically what my problem is, is when I am trying to use it, the mouse will go crazy and just go all over the place by itself. I'm wondering if I have a defective mouse or if the basic is just like that. Can anyone confirm?
 
Sounds to me like either you got a bum mouse, or the surface you're using it on has some reflectivity to it. It could be a driver issue. Have you tried reinstalling the intellipoint driver? You might want to try an older version. Frankly I've had issues using any of the intellipoint software beyond 4.12, so I've just stuck with this "ancient" version.
 
With and without the drivers installed this occurs. I am using a regular mousepad. I have my Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 on this same mousepad and I've never encountered this problem with my Explorer.
