Microsoft fails x3 and yet their stock goes up?

Windows 8, Windows RT, XBone.

I can't remember a big company screwing the pooch so badly three times in a row.

Yet over the last year MS stock went from 21 to 35?

They are a big company with diverse products and lots of revenue streams for now.

Microsoft makes most of their money from business server stuff, office, and windows. Windows 8 may not be a huge hit, but most people still run on some form of Windows. The majority of laptop and desktop users buy their computers from places like best buy. So just cause Windows 8 wasn't amazing, doesn't mean they still don't make money.

I remember reading that actually seemed coincidental and Sony had just happened to have sold a ton of real estate.

Windows 8 initially wasn't received well, but 8.1 has given investors more hope. Further iterations of Surface tablets will probably sell better, especially with Haswell. Office 365 is gaining adoption as well. Windows phone 8 is also holding ground in mobile. Windows partnerships with Barnes and noble and Nokia also look promising.

So far Xbox one seems like the worst one. However, if they are able to bring worthwhile exclusives then it would sell.

They sell MS Office and server software. Corporations don't like change, so they'll keep paying MS for it.

XB1 isn't even released. Under what metric is it a failure? People can bitch about this policy or that feature, but until sales numbers roll out, I'm not calling it one way or another.

Whether or not a particular version of Windows sucks, people and businesses are still buying windows computers, and MS products, and MS services, and support, etc...

RT did suck and was a failure, and that's because the people who would have purchased one already knew it had shitty hardware. Personally, I've simply been waiting for the Haswell Surface Pro.

It is because even if the xbone doesn't sell very well, it is actually a platform they can make money on. I don't see how this is fail from a stockholder perspective. Also, even if they fail to get the gamer market, they can still get the home entertainment market.

Last I heard, they still were making record profits and revenue. Their forward PE is 11.3, so that's not out of line, and is actually borderline cheap. Their dividend has been solid with decent yield. On top of all this, they have a massive cash pile and is growing yoy.

So yeah, they've had a few screwups, but the fundamentals look strong. Until those screwups start affecting the bottom line, I wouldn't expect the stock to tank.

MS is doing well. They declared a quarterly dividend for 9/2013, 23 cents per share. I'll have some money to buy dinner.

Which is smart, because I think mobile devices are becoming powerful enough to start threatening consoles for gaming, especially when the console generations have expanded out to almost 10 ten years, whereas phones and tablets are refreshed every year.

Azure is awesome, the amount of data, apps & services being migrated to it is huge. It has the potential to be a giant cash cow for MS.

The whole Azure platform has really come a long way, a lot more polished now. Built in support for Linux, PHP, MySQL, GitHub, etc. It's pretty competitive even for the non MS stacks.

Honestly my local GameStop still runs windows 2000, because it doesn't crash often. MS is one of those companies that will probably outlive everyone on this board simply because they're so large and integrated into society

Windows 8 and RT being failures doesn't really mean anything since they are getting installed on every new unit that goes out the door (unless the customer downgrades or chooses linux).

So it really doesn't matter, Microsoft makes their money through every PC desktop, laptop and tablet purchases whether people like the products or not. Stockholders know this.
